				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Alex Hershaft, Ph.D., is coming to Israel from May 2 to May 13 to explain how his experiences in the Warsaw ghetto was a major factor in his becoming a leading animal rights activist. With the theme, &#8220;From surviving the Warsaw Ghetto to co-founding the U.S. Animal Rights movement,&#8221;Dr. Hershaft will be giving several talks and will meet with Jewish and Arab animal rights activists.</p>
<p>In his lectures, Hershaft will discuss how dealing with the trauma and grief over the loss of his family during the Holocaust shaped his values and outlook on life, and increased his sense of compassion. When his life was no longer in danger, he felt guilty that he survived when so many others had perished. He felt that in response to his miraculous survival, he should devote himself to repaying a debt to society by devoting his life to helping the helpless and to working to reduce the evil in the world. After visiting a slaughterhouse where he saw piles of hooves, skins, hearts, livers, and skulls that he felt bore silent witness to evil, he became a vegetarian. (and later a vegan) He felt that the challenging mandate, ‘never again’ should apply to animals as well as people.</p>
<p>With a Ph.D. in chemistry, Hershaft could have had a career that would have provided him with a comfortable life. But he gave that up to devote his life to ending the mistreatment of farmed animals. He founded the Farm Animal Reform Movement (FARM), which later became the Farm Animal Rights Movement. The group has many activities, including an annual Animal Rights National Conference that now attracts almost 1,500 attendees to hear leading animal rights activists and to visit booths that provide much information about other animal rights and vegetarian groups as well as information about the latest vegan products, books, and videos. Since their beginning in 1976 and official formation in 1981, FARM has launched a variety of grassroots campaigns in pursuit of their mission: <a href="http://www.dayforanimals.org/">World Day for Farmed Animals </a>, <a href="http://www.meatout.org/">Great American Meatout</a>, <a href="http://www.gentlethanksgiving.org/">Gentle Thanksgiving</a>, <a href="http://10billiontour.org/">10 Billion Lives Tour</a> , <a href="http://www.farmusa.org/letters.htm">Letters from FARM</a>, <a href="http://www.farmusa.org/sabina/index.html">Sabina Fund</a>, <a href="http://www.greenyourdiet.com/">Vegan Earth Day</a>, <a href="http://www.meatoutmondays.org/">Meatout Mondays</a>, and <a href="http://www.livevegan.org/">Live Vegan</a>.</p>
<p>Alex is a former member of the Board of Directors of Jewish Vegetarians of North Americans and remains involved as a member of JVNA&#8217;s Advisory Council. JVNA is working with him in setting up talks in the US about how his Holocaust experiences contributed to his becoming an animal rights activist.</p>
<p>Alex’s schedule includes lectures at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv University, Ben Gurion University in Beersheba, and a civic center in Haifa, a half-dozen intense seminars for local activists, and private meetings with distinguished Israelis.</p>

<p><strong>Last chance to help us make Israel a greener, environmentally healthier land:</strong> Until the end of April you can vote online for the upcoming World Zionist Congress. The results determine, among other things, the division of power at the Jewish National Fund’s international board.</p>
<p>For the past decade I have sat on the JNF board, largely because of the support and intervention of the Green Zionist Alliance – a wonderful group of young environmentalists who decided to get involved and improve Israel’s environmental performance. This support has allowed me to represent them and pursue any number of important green initiatives which include:</p>
<p>· creating new sustainable forestry policies for the JNF,</p>
<p>· putting bike lanes on the organization’s agenda,</p>
<p>· creating a brand new “affirmative action” program to systematically reach out to Israel’s Arab minorities to finance environmental projects,</p>
<p>· increasing the organizational commitment to green building and solar energy,</p>
<p>· leading the fight to prevent JNF funding over the green line,</p>
<p>· expanding funding for forestry and agricultural research as well as river restoration projects, and</p>
<p>· fighting for good government and transparency.</p>
<p>There is a lot more that needs to be done. Whether or not I can continue depends on whether the “GZA” – or Aytzim as they call themselves these days gets enough votes. It only takes ten dollars to register and 3 minutes online to vote. (<strong>The polls close this Thursday April 30th). 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Below is the April 24 Jerusalem Post ‘In Jerusalem’ article about my vegetarian/vegan activities in Israel followed by my Times of Israel blog with links to YouTube videos of my talks, interviews, and other veg activities there.   Kol tuv,   Richard   ====   <strong>Apocalypse Cow</strong> Jerusalem Post article [In Jerusalem section] April 24, 2015 By Gavriel Fiske [Corrections in brackets [ ]] Reducing meat consumption could help avert a global disaster, according to Jewish vegetarian activist Richard Schwartz  Octogenarian vegetarianism activist Richard Schwartz, an Orthodox Jew from Staten Island, New York, has for decades explored the connection between Judaism and vegetarian/vegan diets. He used his position as president of the Jewish Vegetarian Society of North America to promote the idea that, contrary to what one might experience at the table of a typical Jewish household on Shabbat or holidays, Jewish values and religious law can actually condone a meat-free diet. Now 81 and retired from his day job as a mathematics professor at the College of Staten Island and running the day-to-day operations of the Jewish Vegetarian Society, Schwartz, on a recent visit to Israel, told In Jerusalem that his focus has now turned to educating on how vegetarianism can help avert what he warned could be an impending environmental catastrophe caused by human-driven climate change. “Climate experts are predicting that everything has become hotter and drier,” Schwartz pointed out, and said that record heat waves and droughts, along with crazy weather all over the world, have become a new kind of normal. These weather changes are caused by accumulated greenhouse gases in the atmosphere; but what most people don’t realize, Schwartz said, is that “animal-based agriculture creates more greenhouse gases than is emitted by all the cars and airplanes and all other means of transportation worldwide combined.” [according to the 2006 UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report, “Livestock’s Long Shadow.”] “Greenhouse gases” is a catchall term for any gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect. According to reports cited by Schwartz, who recited from memory a dizzying number of studies and statistics to make his case, the gas produced by animal production – methane – stays in the atmosphere for only about 20 years. This means that if meat consumption could be reduced, the main greenhouse gas affecting global warming could also be reduced relatively quickly. Raising animals for food is also inefficient, he stressed, noting that “at a time when water is a precious commodity, it takes 14 times as much water to raise an animal than to raise [the equivalent amount of] plant food.” [Methane is not the main greenhouse gas (CO2 is), but it is significant because, during the 20 years it is in the atmosphere, it is 72-105 (depending on the number’s source) as potent per molecule as CO2.] [Also, the correct statement above is that the amount of water per person on an animal-based diet is as much as 14 times as much as for a person on a vegan diet.] Judaism, he maintained, has very strong teachings in regard to showing compassion for and proper treatment of animals, which he has cited and documented extensively during his career. Although it is “utopian” to think that every Jewish person will become a vegetarian, if people could cut back on eating meat for a few days every week, it could have a great effect. “I am basically arguing that Jews have a choice, and that choice should be made in light of Jewish values towards animal compassion,” he said. [I mentioned not only animal compassion, but also other Jewish teachings that should be considered in making dietary choices: preserving human health, protecting the environment, conserving natural resources, helping hungry people, and pursuing peace.] Although his focus is on Jews and vegetarianism, Schwartz has also been involved in interfaith efforts to highlight the religious roots of vegetarianism. Schwartz, an ardent Zionist, stressed that if one feels that climate change is an issue, one has to do something about it. “I just feel that there is an existential threat to Israel and to the whole world that is being overlooked, and diet changes can make a big difference,” he said. He also noted that “military experts think this could be a catalyst for violence, terror… a multiplier effect with refugees fleeing from climate change.” Of course, not everyone agrees with such dire predictions, and the debate on climate change, especially in the United States, is a fraught, politicized issue. However, Schwartz dismisses outright those who doubt the potential for environmental disaster, and notes that “97 percent of climate scientists and 99.9% of peer-reviewed papers on issue in respected scientific journals argue that climate change is real, is largely caused by human activities and poses great threats to humanity.” During his visit in Israel, Schwartz gave several lectures, and he filmed and uploaded to YouTube interviews with a number of experts, academics, politicians, activists and rabbis, including the director of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies. “Pretty much everyone agrees that climate change is an existential threat,” Schwartz said. Israel, although it has a very high per-capita meat consumption, is also “a leader in terms of veganism and laws about animal compassion,” he noted, and called the country the “greatest place for activism.” Schwartz also praised the recent changes in the Knesset building, which have made it one of the “greenest” parliament buildings in the world. He also noted that Israel has banned the production and import of foie gras, a delicacy of engorged goose liver produced by force feeding the geese. In fact, Schwartz, who has two daughters and their families living in Israel, is now, along with his wife, “very seriously considering making aliya” and relocating to the Holy Land. “I am hoping to stay active, and there is no better place than in Israel and Jerusalem,” he said. But it might not be so easy. Besides the challenge of moving “after 55 years [actually 47] on Staten Island,” when he recently visited a senior citizens’ center in Israel to see if it would be suitable, the “incredulous workers” showed him a lunch menu that offered only chicken or hamburgers, which he described as “madness and sheer insanity.• ======== <strong>Material below about my veg events in Israel, including a link to my Times of Israel blog giving links to You Tube videos of my talks, interviews, and other activities in Israel</strong> As indicated in my Times of Israel blog (link below), I just returned from Israel where I made extensive efforts to increase awareness that climate change is an existential threat to Israel, the US, and indeed the entire world, and that a shift away from the production and consumption of meat is essential to efforts to avert a climate catastrophe. I gave 8 talks (5 of which are on YouTube), was interviewed 4 times, twice on radio programs, and I filmed interviews with many leading Israelis, all of which are now on YouTube. The key Israelis who I interviewed include the director of the Green Knesset program, the founder and director of EcoPeace/Middle East, the founder and director of the Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development, the former chief rabbi of Ireland, the director and students, faculty, and staff of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, an institute that has Israeli, Palestinian, Jordanian, and international students, some leading Israeli rabbis, a former member of the Israeli Knesset, the coordinator of the Jewish Vegetarian Society in Jerusalem, and two leading animal rights activists. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Every day and every meal, we make food choices.  When we do, we invariably make an impact on the planet because different foods carry different environmental footprints.  Below are a few things to keep in mind in terms of what you eat and its effect on God’s creation, the Earth.</p>
<ul>
<li>Choose less meat in your diet:   Most if not all of the climate pollution that our food creates happens before we buy it. The extent of these impacts depends on how much energy, land, feed or fertilizer, processing, and transportation is required to put a particular food on our tables. Yet sometimes the food itself is the problem. Cattle, for example, produce 34% of all U.S. emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Some of the meats with the largest carbon footprint include:  Lamb, which has the highest emissions of any food, generating 86.4 pounds of greenhouse gases for every kilogram (2.2 pounds) eaten and beef, which is number two with 59.6 pounds of gases produced per 2.2 pounds consumed.  Eliminating or reducing the amount of lamb and beef in your diet will go a long way toward reducing your own carbon footprint.</li>
<li>Choose grass-fed, pasture-raised and organic meats:  If you prefer not to reduce or eliminate meat from your diet, you are best off eating meat that is grass-fed, pasture-raised and/or organic and locally raised.  Meat that is organic, locally raised and/or grass fed has a lower carbon impact in terms of producing the meat as it goes from farm to your table.</li>
<li> Fish has a lesser environmental impact than beef or poultry, but it is still preferable to buy wild fish as opposed to farmed fish.  The former is both healthier and better for the planet as its cultivation uses less energy and has a lower carbon footprint.</li>
<li>Also try to reduce your cheese intake, as cheese is number three on the list in terms of having a high carbon footprint. Try eating more strong flavored cheeses like cheddar and bleu. You can use less of these and still retain a distinctive cheese taste in your dishes.</li>
<li>Go vegetarian:  Try going vegetarian for all or some of your meals.  There is such a wide variety of tasty vegetables readily available today at local farmers markets, conventional grocery stores or through joining a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.  Pick up a good vegetarian cookbook and you might not miss that meat after all.</li>
</ul>
<p>In general, it’s no secret that the lower we eat on the food chain, the fewer impacts we’ll create.  Even making small changes to your diet can go a long way.</p>

<p><b>About Eden Village Camp: </b>Eden Village Camp aims to be a living model of a thriving, sustainable Jewish community, grounded in social responsibility and inspired Jewish spiritual life. By bringing the wisdom of our tradition to the environmental, social, and personal issues important to today’s young people, we practice a Judaism that is substantive and relevant. Through our Jewish environmental and service-learning curricula, joyful Shabbat observance, pluralistic Jewish expression, and inspiring, diverse staff role models, we foster our campers’ positive Jewish identity and genuine commitment to tikkun olam (healing the world). Our 3 acre educational farm and orchard are based on principles of permaculture, sustainable and organic farming. We produce annual vegetables, perennials, and tend educational gardens as well as animals.</p>
<p><b>About the Farm Educator Apprenticeship: </b>This is a paid six-month apprenticeship for young adults seeking hands-on experience. In the Spring build your knowledge based on agriculture, farm-based education and Jewish community. In the Summer, work at our 8-week intensive summer camp as Jewish Farm Educators. In the fall, take ownership and integrate your new skills by diving deeper into independent projects.  Live on-site at our beautiful camp, one hour north of New York City. By joining the farm staff at Eden Village, apprentices will hold two main responsibilities &#8211; tending our growing spaces and educating in our all of our programming through the spring, summer and fall. Apprentices will also have an opportunity to dive deeper into one of four focus areas: perennials, annuals, animals, and educational gardens. In these specialties apprentices will gain a deeper understanding of certain aspects of farming and will take on leadership and special projects to booster their learning and the learning of campers and program participants.</p>
<p><b>Details: </b>April 14th, 2015 &#8211; October 22nd 2015, Apprentices receive full room and board at Eden Village, as well as a modest stipend. Extensive experience is not necessary but experiential curiosity is required. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Jews are properly concerned about the well-being of Israel and wish her to be secure and prosperous, but what about security, wealth, and comfort of another kind &#8212; the quality of Israel&#8217;s air, water, and ecosystems?  What about the physical condition of the eternal holy Land? What about climate change that, according to the Israeli Union for Environmental Defense (Adam Teva v’Din), may result in an average temperature increase of up to 6 degrees Celsius, a drop in average precipitation of 20-30 percent, severe storms when rain occurs, increased desertification, and an inundation of the coastal plain where most Israelis live by a rising Mediterranean Sea. While not discussed frequently enough, these and other environmental dangers and degradations have increasingly become serious issues that will greatly affect Israel&#8217;s future.</p>
<p>An election has started that gives you a chance to have a say about Israel’s environmental future. While most Jews are unaware of it, they are entitled to a voice about Israel’s future. That voice is the World Zionist Congress, which meets every four years in Jerusalem with the mandate to fund programs and create policies that will help achieve the goals of the Jewish People.  The Congress was initially set up by Theodor Herzl and led directly to the establishment of the State of Israel.  It has been a partner with the Government of Israel since that time but sadly, very few Jews know that they have a chance to speak up through their vote. if you are Jewish and over 18 years of age, you can make your voice heard by voting<span style="text-decoration: line-through">!</span></p>
<p>The voting takes place from January 14, 2015 through April 30, 2015.  Every Jewish person over age 18 is entitled to vote for the slate of his or her choice.  As with the first Zionist Congress held in 1897, there is a nominal charge to vote ($5 for persons under the age of 30 and $10 for those above the age of 30).  The charge is used to defray the costs of the election.</p>
<p>The 37th Zionist Congress will meet in October 2015 and will include 525 delegates representing Jews in many nations around the world. The United States will field 145 delegates who represent a variety of political organizations.  My slate is called <strong>Green Israel, </strong>which includes Ayztim&#8211;Ecological Judaism;, the Green Zionist Alliance, <a href="http://jewcology.org/">Jewcology.org</a>, and Shomrei Breishit. We are focused on taking action to protect Israel’s environment, increase the country&#8217;s use of renewable energy, and to help Israel become a global leader in sustainable practice.</p>
<p><strong>Why Vote for Green Israel?</strong></p>
<p>Many groups will be competing to participate in the 37<sup>th</sup> World Zionist Congress but few can have the impact that Green Israel can. While competing groups would like to have their voice heard on political issues involving Israel and its foreign or religious policy objectives, they may not have any significant impact because the Israeli Knesset has exclusive control over these issues. The Green Israel slate can make a difference on issues regarding land since the World Zionist Organization controls the Jewish National Fund, which owns over 14% of the actual land of Israel. What is done on that land (which includes nature preserves as well as cities) can be directly influenced by the World Zionist Congress. In other words, Green Israel can make a real impact and not just a symbolic one. We can create more environmentally friendly practices and help Israel be more energy independent if we can garner enough votes.</p>
<p>The Green Zionist Alliance (GZA) is the first environmental group to ever participate in the World Zionist Congress. Now Green Israel, which has become the umbrella slate for Aytzim, the  GZA and our other Jewish environmental partners, has been embraced by all streams of the Zionist movement — left to right, secular to religious, Reform to Orthodox. From the early Zionist pioneers to Israel&#8217;s modern environmental, water-saving, and renewable energy technologies, ecological sustainability has been a fundamental tenet of Zionism. Those who love the land of Israel must work to protect it. Voting for the Green Israel slate will help ensure that environmental sustainability stays at the forefront of Israel’s future.</p>

<p>Currently most Jews eat meat and other animal products and relatively few Jews seem concerned about the cruel mistreatment of animals on factory farms and in other areas. However, David Sears landmark book, now in its just released second edition, with its many examples of Jewish teachings about compassion for animals, has the potential to change all of this.</p>
<p><em>The Vision of Eden</em> is a compilation of translations from various sources, ranging from the classic texts of Judaism to contemporary rulings in Jewish law, much of which has never before been translated to English. It also includes a number of essays by Sears that serve as prefaces to the translations and provide general overviews that discuss and analyze the source material. It is a companion volume to the author’s  book, &#8220;Compassion for Humanity in the Jewish Tradition: A Source Book,&#8221; which was published by Jason Aronson, Inc., in 1998.</p>
<p>This book has great potential to start a respectful dialogue on vegetarianism, the proper treatment of animals, and related issues in the Jewish community. Here are some reasons:</p>
<p>1. Rabbi Sears has the background, wisdom, sensitivity, compassion, and commitment to effectively raise the consciousness of the Jewish community concerning Jewish teachings on animals. As a Breslav Chassid, his commitment to Jewish law and tradition cannot be challenged. No one can claim that he is just one more animal welfare advocate who doesn’t care about Judaism and is not concerned about human problems.</p>
<p>2. The author&#8217;s knowledge of Hebrew and Kabbalistic, Chassidic, and other Jewish sources has enabled him to find teachings that are not commonly known. His book will enable religious communities to discover the rich treasures of material about compassion to animals that will challenge them to live up to the highest ideals of Judaism.</p>
<p>3. His book goes beyond those of other Jewish scholars who have written about Jewish teachings on animals because he combines his extensive knowledge of Judaism with an awareness of how far realities related to how society treats animals differ from the demands of Jewish teachings, and he is committed to making others aware of the need to end these discrepancies.<br />
4. Because of its scholarly merits and firm grounding in Torah and rabbinic tradition, <em>The Vision of Eden</em> will be a respectful but powerful message to the Jewish community that it will not be able to easily ignore.  Because of the authenticity and authority of his sources, no intellectually honest person who reads his book would be able to say,  &#8220;Animals, animals &#8212; why don’t you worry about people first?&#8221;  While not a polemic (in working for completeness and objectivity, Sears discusses some passages that favor meat-eating), his book shows that the vast majority of Jews, including those who take Jewish law seriously, are negligent with regard to important Torah teachings related to animals. Many in the Jewish community will be interested in the book because of the uniqueness of a Chassid writing about Jewish teachings on animal welfare. Hence, it has the potential to raise the consciousness of the Jewish community with regard to animal-based diets, wearing fur coats, animal experimentation and other animal-related issues, and to get these issues onto the agenda of the Jewish community.</p>
<p>4. David Sears’ book also has great potential to eventually influence other religious communities and the general public.</p>
<p>As Rabbi Shear-Yashuv Cohen, Chief Rabbi of Haifa, stated in an approbation in the book, &#8220;Every reader of this unique and holy book will benefit extensively from it. Indeed, this book, The Vision of Eden, makes one feel that he has been handed a key to open the closed gates of the Garden of Eden that were shut to us ever since Adam was expelled …&#8221;</p>
<p>It is essential that rabbis, Jewish teachers, and other influential members of the Jewish community and other communities become aware of the teachings in Sears’ book and put them into practice. The revitalization of Judaism and the sustainability of our imperiled planet depend on it.</p>

<p>Chanukah commemorates the single small container of pure olive oil — expected to be enough for only one day — which, according to the <em>Talmud</em> (Shabbat 21b), miraculously lasted for eight days in the rededicated Temple.</p>
<p>A switch to vegetarianism would be using our wisdom and compassion to help inspire another great miracle: the end of the tragedy of world hunger, therefore ensuring the survival of tens of millions of people annually. Currently, from one-third to one-half of the world’s grain, and about three-quarters of major food crops in the U.S. (<em>e.g.</em>, corn, wheat, soybeans, oats), is fed to animals destined for slaughter, while almost a <em>billion</em> poor people chronically suffer from malnutrition and its debilitating effects, tens of thousands of them consequently dying each day, one every few seconds.</p>
<p>Chanukah represents the victory of the idealistic and courageous few, over the seemingly invincible power and dominant values of the surrounding society. We learn through both our religious studies and history that might does not make right, even if it sometimes rules the moment. Therefore, quality is more important than quantity; spirituality is more vital than materialism, though each is necessary. &#8220;Not by might and not by power, but by My spirit,&#8221; says Zechariah 4:6, part of the prophetic reading for Shabbat Chanukah. Today, vegetarians are relatively few in number, though growing, but the highest ideals and spirit of Judaism are on their side.</p>
<p>According to the <em>Book of Macabees</em>, some Macabees lived on plant foods — to “avoid being polluted” (by eating non-kosher meat)— when they hid in caves and in the mountains to escape capture. Further, the major foods associated with Chanukah, <em>latkes</em>  (potato pancakes) and <em>sufganiyot</em> (jelly donuts), are vegetarian foods — as is chocolate <em>gelt</em> — and the vegetable oils that are used in their preparation are a reminder of the pure vegetable oil (olive) used in the lighting of the Temple’s Menorah.</p>
<p>The miracle of the oil brings the use of fuel and other resources into focus. One day’s oil was able to last for eight days in the Temple, a miracle of resource conservation. Conservation and energy-efficiency are sacred acts and vegetarianism allows resources to go much further, since <em>far</em> less oil, water, land, topsoil, chemicals, labor, and other agricultural resources are required for plant-based diets than for animal-centered diets, while <em>far</em> less waste, pollution, and greenhouse gases are produced. For example, it can require up to 78 calories of non-renewable fossil fuel for each calorie of protein obtained from factory-farmed beef, whether kosher or otherwise, but only 2 calories of fossil fuel to produce a calorie of protein from soybeans.</p>
<p>In addition to resource conservation and economic efficiency, a switch toward vegetarianism would greatly benefit the health of individuals, the condition of our environment, and would sharply reduce the suffering and death of billions of animals. Further, the social, psychological, and spiritual benefits should not be underestimated. Many people who switch to a vegetarian diet report feeling physically, emotionally, <em>and</em> spiritually better. And more and more Jews and others are doing just that!</p>
<p>Chanukah also represents the triumph of idealistic non-conformity. Like the Hebrew prophets, the Macabees fought for their inner beliefs, rather than conforming to external pressure. They were willing to proudly exclaim: this we believe, this we stand for, this we are willing to struggle for. Like the great Prophets and the celebrated Macabees, vegetarians represent this type of progressive non-conformity by an inspired minority. At a time when most people, especially in wealthier countries, think of animal products as the main part of their meals, vegetarians are resisting and insisting that there is a better, healthier, more compassionate, more environmentally sustainable, and ethical choice, one that better fits with our religious values and philosophical beliefs.</p>
<p>The word Chanukah means dedication, while the Hebrew root of the word means education. Each year, we should re-educate ourselves about the horrible realities of factory farming and slaughterhouses, as well as re-dedicate and beautify our inner temples. We can do this by <em>practicing</em>  the powerful Jewish teachings and highest values of Judaism, as another way to “proclaim the miracle” of Chanukah and Jewish renewal. These sacred values and holy deeds ( <em>mitzvot</em>) include compassion for others, including animals ( <em>tsa’ar ba’alei chayi</em>, preserving one’s health (<em>pekuach nefesh</em>), conservation of resources  (<em>bal tashchit</em>), proper spiritual intention (<em>kavanah </em>), righteousness and charity (<em>tzedakah</em>), peace and justice (<em>shalom v’tzedek</em>), being partners in creation (<em>shomrei adamah)</em>, healing our world(<em>tikkun olam)</em>, and increasing in matters of holiness (<em>ma’alin bakodesh v’ayn moridim)</em>, going from strength to strength, just as Hillel successfully argued that we should light the menorah for the eight days in ascending order).</p>
<p>Chanukah commemorates the deliverance of the Jews from the Syrian-Greeks. In our time, vegetarianism can be a step toward deliverance of society from various modern plagues and tragedies, including global warming, world hunger, deforestation, air and water pollution, species extinction, resource depletion, heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, obesity, rising health care costs, and lost productivity, among others.</p>
<p>One way to achieve the wonderful aspirations of Judaism is by switching to a vegetarian diet. A shift toward vegetarianism can also be a major factor in the rededication and renewal of Judaism, as it would further demonstrate that Jewish values are not only relevant but essential to everyday personal life and global survival.</p>
<p>The letters on a Diaspora <em>dreidel</em><em>)</em>, are an acronym for <em>nes gadol hayah sham</em>, a great miracle happened there. May the celebration of this joyous holiday inspire <em>another</em> miracle within each of us.</p>
<p>May we <em>all</em> have a happy, healthy, and <em>miraculous</em> Chanukah!</p>

<p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.303960623124567.1073741834.161683324018965&amp;type=1">Young Urban Moshav</a> is thrilled to have the opportunity to create a demonstration garden at the <a href="http://www.jcceastbay.org/">JCC of the East Bay</a>. The garden is intended to serve the after school program’s garden curriculum and to function as a Jewish outdoor learning center for the community. The project site design will integrate best urban garden practices with Jewish cultural items such as traditional holiday foods and the fruits of Israel. The space will accommodate groups of learners and holiday activities. Young Urban Moshav’s participatory approach includes support with community engagement, from communications content and crowdsourcing to strategic connections with other Jewish green initiatives.</p>

<p>Young Urban Moshav, a new Jewish food start-up, has been accepted into the Hazon CSA network and aims to develop a residentially-based Community Supported Agriculture program. The JCC East Bay garden will be an example of garden design and implementation that Young Urban Moshav is offering for other institutions and private residences as it embarks on its goal to grow a system of interconnected urban agriculture sites across the East Bay.</p>
<p>In developing this exciting demonstration garden, Young Urban Moshav is sourcing labor and products from within the community whenever possible. As of the end of November 2014, exciting progress has been made. The garden has received its first major contribution from Katherine Gulley at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/raisedbedlamwoodworks">Raised Bedlam Woodworks</a> in Berkeley. A beautiful redwood table and bench, including end planters and a garden box, are already on site! Katherine makes custom outdoor and reclaimed furniture. She herself grew up in Berkeley attending the JCC and proudly claims that she was at her after school program at the JCC when the big earthquake of ‘89 hit.</p>

<p>The garden site, an alley between the southwest corner of the JCC building and the adjacent commercial CVS building, is being graded during the month of December so that the main area in use will be flat. Approval has been obtained for a retaining wall and ramp, to be constructed by community member Jory Gessow of Gessow Landscaping. You might recognize Jory from the annual Tikkun Leyl Shavuot events as he is an avid participant of many years!</p>
<p>JCC After School Director Cassie Brown has been overseeing the project. Green Educator Ezra Ranz has been coordinating between the JCC and Young Urban Moshav on a volunteer basis while already growing some starts with students in small boxes on location (pictured in the featured image of this article). Facilities Supervisor Chuck Weis is managing construction details regarding the building site. Front Desk Supervisor Selena Martinez has been filling an insightful and exemplary advisory role. The garden design has been developed by Young Urban Moshav volunteer Talya Ilovitz, who now is updating the drawings to include the newest developments.</p>
<p>Next major steps include construction of raised garden beds and installation of drip irrigation as well as a spiral herb garden and worm bin. Material contributions are being graciously accepted, from lumber to soil, garden equipment and planters to irrigation supplies, seeds, plants and even worms! <p>The Etz Hayim commentary describes <a href="https://www.jewishpub.org/product/9780827607125/etz-hayim" target="_blank">&#8220;the 20 years at Laban&#8217;s house as a &#8216;dark night for the soul,&#8217; years spent struggling with the dark forces represented by Laban&#8217;s treachery and Jacob&#8217;s confronting his own attracting to deceit&#8221; (p. 166). </a></p>
<p>However, despite the challenges and darkness that Jacob deals with in the 20 years, he also connects with God.  Etz Hayim continues, <a href="https://www.jewishpub.org/product/9780827607125/etz-hayim" target="_blank">&#8220;when the Sages attribute to Jacob the institution of the evening prayer (Ma&#8217;ariv), they may be crediting him as the first person able to find God in the midst of darkness&#8221; (p. 166) </a></p>

<p>Jacob&#8217;s time of darkness was an opportunity for him to find God. And, as <a href="http://origin.library.constantcontact.com/download/get/file/1101334266965-704/7+Vayetze+-+Encounters+with+God.pdf" target="_blank"> Yael Shy comments, &#8220;Jacob leaves us with the challenge of recognizing our encounters with God in all God&#8217;s forms.&#8221;</a> There are many dark and challenging parts of our lives and society. Our food system is one. How is it possible that the wealthiest nation in the world has<a href="http://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/impact-of-hunger/hunger-and-poverty/hunger-and-poverty-fact-sheet.html" target="_blank"> 45.3 million citizens living in poverty and 49.1 million hungry people? </a> In addition, for <a href="http://www.rwjf.org/content/dam/farm/reports/issue_briefs/2012/rwjf71327" target="_blank">29 million Americans who live in low-income areas, the nearest supermarket is more than a mile away.</a> When someone is poor, without transportation and/or living in a low-income area without a supermarket, it significantly hampers one&#8217;s ability to eat nutritious food. Despite, this dark aspect of our society, there are countless individuals who recognize this challenge and are re-imagining our food system.</p>

<p>Rabbi Brad Artson writes in <span style="text-decoration: underline">The Bedside Torah,</span> about the &#8220;power of imagination&#8221; in Vayetzei. He writes that, &#8220;through the power of imagination, each of us retains the ability to transform the world. . . . Our religion trains us to visualize a better world. . . .[and] as with Jacob, our imagination can provide the necessary first step toward transforming our world and ourselves&#8221; (p. 47-48).</p>
<p>Many Americans are envisioning and transforming our food systems to ensures that poverty and hunger are eliminated and that all people have regular access to nutritious foods.</p>
<p>One such person is <a href="http://www.newrootsproduce.org/" target="_blank">Karyn Moskowitz of New Roots in Louisville, KY.</a> She&#8217;s featured in  <a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/faith-in-food-sue-campbell/1118939984?ean=9781909657410" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline">Faith in Food: Changing the World One Meal at a Time</span>, a fabulous new book by Susie Weldon and Sue Campbell that shares inspiring, exciting stories of global food activists who, guided by their faith, are re-imagining their food systems </a>Karyn&#8217;s organization runs &#8220;Fresh Stops&#8221; which works with residents who are low-income and live in neighborhoods without access to fresh produce. Through New Roots, residents pool their money and SNAP (food stamps) benefits to bulk purchase fresh produce from local farms. Without this program, participants would not be eating these healthful foods.</p>

<p>The recipe I created this week symbolizes Jacob&#8217;s journey from sunset to sunrise, with darkness in the middle of his journey. The dish is anchored on both ends by a citrus mixture, symbolizing sunset/sunrise and black wild rice in the center to represent darkness.  The pomegranate seeds mixed with the rice are a reference to God&#8217;s recognition of Jacob&#8217;s hard work tending to Laban&#8217;s &#8221; streaked, speckled and mottled flock.&#8221;  After presenting on a platter, to symbolize the journey, one can then blend everything together in a bowl to enjoy.</p>

<p>Ingredients</p>
<p>2 Valencia oranges, chopped<br />
2 Mandarin oranges, chopped<br />
1 cup black wild rice<br />
1/2 Pomegranate seeds<br />
1 handful mint, chopped<br />
olive oil<br />
salt</p>

<p>Preparation</p>
<p>1. Cook rice over medium heat until done.</p>
<p>2. Chop oranges into small pieces. Finely chop mint and blend with oranges.</p>
<p>3. When rice is done, fold in seeds, drizzle with olive oil and add a pinch of salt. Place in center of platter and citrus mixture on each end.</p>
<p>4. After serving, blend ingredients together.</p>

Eternal God, You created earth and heavens with mercy, and blew the breath of life into animals and humans. We were created amidst a world of wholeness, a world called &#8220;very good,&#8221; pure and beautiful, but now your many works are being erased by us from the book of life.</p>
<p>Not by our righteousness do we plead our prayers before You, Holy One of All, for we have sinned, we have despoiled, we have destroyed.</p>
<p>And so we confess together our collective sins, and ask for forgiveness:</p>
<p>For the sin which we have committed before You intentionally or unintentionally;</p>
<p>And for the sin which we have committed before You inadvertently;</p>
<p>For the sin which we have committed before You openly or secretly,</p>
<p>And for the sin which we have committed before You knowingly or unknowingly;</p>
<p>For the sin which we have committed before You, and before our children and grandchildren, by desecrating the sacred Earth,</p>
<p>And for the sin which we have committed before You of going beyond being fruitful and multiplying to overfilling the planet;</p>
<p>For the sin which we have committed before You by putting comfort above conscience,</p>

<p>Ma&#8217;yan Tikvah celebrates the High Holidays in the woods with morning services on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur as well as Kol Nidre services on Erev Yom Kippur. The services are led by Rabbi Katy Allen and are a combination of traditional and nontraditional; they are informal and participatory for those who wish to add their voices. Morning services are held outside, or if the weather requires it, under an outdoor pavilion. There is time to sing, to appreciate the natural world around us, to meditate and pray, to read and discuss the Torah portion, to hear the sound of the Sofar on Rosh HaShanah, and to remember our loved ones during Yizkor on Yom Kippur. On the first day of Rosh HaShanah, our services are followed by a pot-luck lunch and then tashlich.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We will have a very different service on the second day of Rosh HaShanah &#8211; a hike interspersed with meditations, prayers, discussion, and the blowing of the shofar, and the day will include a picnic lunch &#8211; bring your own. We will through the fields and woods and end with a picnic near the Sudbury River.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Our Kol Nidre service is mostly indoors, but if weather permits we go outside for part of the service. We will also have a short Neilah service at the end of Yom Kippur followed by a pot-luck break-fast. All are welcome, including families with children. The sites for the first day of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur are handicap accessible.</p>

<p>There’s a precious community garden nestled between buildings on a crowded cobblestone street high up in the city of Tzvat, Israel. It began 18 years ago as a memorial community garden, in memory of a son who passed too soon, and it became a <a href="http://www.safed.co.il/stevens-garden.html">city landmark</a>. Today this sacred place, enjoyed by and open to all, is receiving loving <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/steven-s-garden">support</a> toward renewing the shared space.</p>
<p><b>The Garden Seeds: Untimely death of a son, grief of a mother, new friendship</b></p>
<p>First, a mother was seeking a way to honor her son who was killed by cancer as a teenager 20 years ago this past spring. Shirel Levine was considering planting a tree in his memory as she was grieving over her tremendous loss, as an American living in northern Israel. She met the wife of her doctor, and this righteous woman Tamar Bittelman (of blessed memory) expressed a deep compassion with Shirel for the loss of her son. Within 10 minutes of their first encounter, Tamar suggested a garden, and she offered to help set it up.</p>
<p>Steven’s Garden in Tzvat was first established with much communal involvement. The grand opening involved the unveiling of a mural, live music, food and celebration. Tamar and her husband Noach built the first garden beds and then weekly taught local children how to plant and grow food there. The garden lived on, and has been maintained over the years at a low-cost for the benefit of the community.</p>

<p>Somehow Steven’s Garden reached me throughout the years as I reside in the Western US. When I lived in Tucson in the 1990’s, I knew Steven’s sister and so our mutual friend <a href="http://gardeninc.org/">Susan Silverman</a> &#8211; also a gardener &#8211; ecstatically informed me about this sweet community garden when she visited Tzvat some years later. I personally met Tamar Bittelman in 2004 when I moved to the East Bay in California where she was teaching kindergarten. It wasn’t until 2010 that I discovered Tamar was a founder of Steven’s Garden, when my daughter’s kindergarten class at Oakland Hebrew Day School raised funds as a tzedaka project for Steven’s Garden, and purchased a lemon tree that was planted there. I visited Israel in 2011 for the only time ever with my children, and we visited the tree. Several young yeshiva bochers were enjoying the garden, sitting with their siddurim and chatting reclining on the bench under the mural. It was a joy to finally see this garden for myself, right across the street from the famous <a href="http://www.kosmic-kabbalah.com/">Kabbalah artist David Friedman</a>’s studio.</p>
<p><b>Tamar </b><b>Bittelman Tzeddekes: The Garden Founder’s Legacy</b></p>

<p>Tamar Bittelman was not only a kindergarten teacher but was also a co-founder of the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beit-Midrash-Ohr-HaChaim/298257777341?sk=info">Beit Midrash Ohr HaChaim</a>, a unique unaffiliated independent Torah-learning center located in Berkeley, California from 1998 &#8211; 2012 under the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Herschel Yolles, the Samborer Rebbe z”l. Tamar started numerous gardens during her life, including a garden adjacent to Congregation Beth Israel in Berkeley before its renovation in 2004.</p>
<p>Tamar’s Tzvat garden legacy is an echo of the story of her grandmother, Esther Beker Reinin of the pioneering Sturman family who was part of Hashomer, an original Jewish defense organization in Palestine first established in 1909. Beker Reinin was part of the historic security organization, serving on horseback protecting the sprouting Jewish settlements. She was also involved in an agricultural school in Israel. Every year at the Beit Midrash Ohr HaChaim in Berkeley, Tamar would sponsor a kiddush to honor the anniversary of her grandmother’s passing, and she would retell stories. There was even a story of when Tamar was walking along a road in a kibbutz in Israel, and a some old-timers walked by her and stopped, and told her, “You look just like Esther Beker Reinin.”</p>
<p>Many of today’s Jewish environmentalists have met Steven’s Garden’s founder Tamar Bittelman. Tamar attended the 2011 <a href="http://jewcology.org/author/Hazon/">Hazon</a> Food Conference in Davis, California where her husband Noach Bittelman the Acupuncturist presented on Jewish health and spirituality, the Earth, and the Holy Land. One year after we attended the Food Conference, Tamar edited my first blog article for Times of Israel, where I recounted a special woman’s circle that we held at the Hazon event, in the broader context of <a href="http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/redeeming-humanity-the-jewish-approach-to-women/">women’s central role in redemption</a> of the world according the Jewish tradition.</p>
<p>Tamar and Noach Bittelman moved back to Northern Israel from California in 2012. During her last visit to Berkeley one year ago, Tamar was excited to learn of my newest project, a Hazon CSA which is in its inception stages and includes in its food security concept residential and communal gardens, and a pop-up kosher vegan soup and salad restaurant. She made an extra call to me during her trip to share her enthusiasm for <a href="http://www.youngurbanmoshav.org/">Young Urban Moshav</a>, and agreed to serve on the Board of Directors.</p>
<p>Sadly, and to the shock of many who have declared her righteousness, Tamar passed away unexpectedly after returning to Israel, on a holy Shabbos during daavening 24 Shvat 5774 (January 25, 2014.) Tamar’s family has set up <a href="http://www.razoo.com/story/Hamorah-Tamar-Kindergarten-Scholarship-And-Educational-Fund">HaMorah Tamar Kindergarten Fund</a> at Oakland Hebrew Day School in her memory. Tamar is buried in Tzvat, the same city in Israel where Steven’s Garden, which she founded 18 years ago, continues to grow.</p>
<p><b>The Memorial and the Garden Renewal</b></p>
<p>Steven’s mother described on <a href="http://radiofreenachlaot.blogspot.com/2014/08/save-stevens-garden.html">Radio Free Nachlaot</a> in August 2014 how others recount to her that they feel Steven’s beautiful energy in the garden. A memorial garden is an example of the environment as habitat outside our bodies for our emotion, spirituality, and communal sharing. It is a place of comfort and healing.</p>
<p>Steven’s Garden holds the empathy of a woman hearing another woman grieving for her lost son, the generosity of creativity that builds and enriches the community, and comfort for mourners. It is a legacy of a grandmother and then granddaughter who loved, guarded and nurtured Eretz HaKodesh and the people of the land.</p>
<p>Community gardens can serve many functions, and Steven’s continues to hold potential for many possibilities. <p>I am in my favorite place at my favorite time: in the garden, in the morning, before the cars have started up, before the noise of lawnmowers and leaf blowers. The crickets are singing, the birds responding. The rising sun’s light filters through the leaves. A beginning.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It has been a tough year in the garden. An endless winter caused a late start and temperatures have been cooler than usual. A call from critter to critter that I cannot hear lets them know there is bounty on my corner. Maybe it’s because the peach tree lost its flowers in a hard spring rain, but squirrels have eaten a fair amount of my produce this year, taking a bit of a turnip and leaving the rest (yeah, I’m not surprised). Mice, too, have traversed here. I have never seen one, but my garden helpers have. Let’s not forget the birds.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the same time, the blackberries went wild. Literally. I have cut them back and dug up new plants several times. Cucumbers abound. Arugula sings its symphony. The carrots are fat and rich. I could go on. But what hits me this year is the contrast between disappointment and satisfaction; the moments of wondering why I do this at all, pitched against the incredible feeling of gratitude when I bag up 4 bags of produce filled with veggies, fruits and herbs, for our local food pantry. When neighbors come by and tell me they’ve been feasting on the blackberries. Who wouldn’t?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This is the rhythm of the Elul and High Holy Day season, the time when we take stock. How many things did not turn out the way we wanted them to this year? How many grapes did we plant that turned sour? (Most have mine have been chomped on by critters.) What do we do? Do we become depressed or disheartened? Angry? Do we give up? Or do we plant more seeds?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Perhaps we do all of the above. Perhaps we need to feel the grief and disappointment of our losses and our failures. Perhaps we need to feel the frustration. But Elul and the High Holy Day season tell us this is only part of the process. For us to fulfill the essence of this time of year demands that we somehow find a way to get to the other side. Maybe that includes a change of project, or maybe it means finding a new way in the same project.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I sometimes think that it is all the difficulties involved in growing food that inspired our Jewish ancestry to move away from its agricultural roots. This was revived, however, with the kibbutz movement in Israel’s pioneer days, and is experiencing further revival all over the Jewish world today. As we demand more sustainable lifestyles and healthier, more affordable foods, we are revitalizing our synagogue and neighborhood networks to feed ourselves and the hungry around us.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Even as I write this I observe a critter that has found her way into the grapevines. I go over to see the culprit. A squirrel. She takes her time untangling herself from the vines, climbs up the adjacent telephone pole, and when far enough away from me to rest in safety, turns. I see the bulge in her mouth. She takes out her dessert – a nice, fat purple grape, and eats it in front of me.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Not all of our plans will fruit the way we hope or plan. But this is the season to harvest the best of our works this year, and to plan and plant again, for a fuller, richer, more bountiful harvest in the year to come.</p>

<p>May your Elul and the year to come be rich with new ideas and renewed energy to plant and see them bear fruit.</p>

<p>I am fretting as we weave ourselves up the steep slope and you can see where the cars have already fallen off the cliff</p>

<p>Let alone the screaming families that want to test their fate on these trails that have seen no rain yet— not me</p>

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">For an entire month before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we focus on atoning and returning to God. But what exactly, in real life terms, does atoning and returning to God mean? We plan our path to return by adding Psalm 27 to our daily prayers. This psalm repeatedly affirms hope in God. It ends with:</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;text-align: center"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Ps 27:14 <i>&#8220;Let your heart be firm and bold, and hope for the Lord.&#8221;</i></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">As <a title="http://smile.amazon.com/The-Book-Psalms-Translation-Commentary/dp/0393337049/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1407760770&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=robert+alter+psalms" href="http://smile.amazon.com/The-Book-Psalms-Translation-Commentary/dp/0393337049/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1407760770&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=robert+alter+psalms"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://smile.amazon.com/The-Book-Psalms-Translation-Commentary/dp/0393337049/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1407760770&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=robert+alter+psalms">Robert Alter</span></a> comments, the Psalm opens and closes with the same sentiment &#8220;It begins by affirming trust in God and reiterates that hopeful confidence, but the trust has to be asserted against the terrors of being overwhelmed by implacable enemies.” </span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">The psalm focuses on hope, but what does hope have to do with High Holiday atonement? We all have some circumstance that destabilizes us, quashes our hope, fosters procrastination, apathy, or alienation. As you think about your issue, consider the possibility that one type of sin is succombing to despair, and for this sin, returning to God is pushing despair away and holding on firmly to hope.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">My issue is climate change activism. I’m regularly filled with despair that my children and grandchildren won’t be safe, and that it is already too late to help them. <a title="http://energyskeptic.com/2014/greenland-ice-sheet-sea-level-rise-23-feet/" href="http://energyskeptic.com/2014/greenland-ice-sheet-sea-level-rise-23-feet/"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://energyskeptic.com/2014/greenland-ice-sheet-sea-level-rise-23-feet/">Greenland&#8217;s</span></a> ice sheet is melting faster than predicted. So is the <a title="http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/05/inquiring-minds-richard-alley-antarctica-greenland-sandy" href="http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/05/inquiring-minds-richard-alley-antarctica-greenland-sandy"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/05/inquiring-minds-richard-alley-antarctica-greenland-sandy">West Antarctic</span></a> icesheet. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">I steer clear of this, my worst fear, I turn towards hope that humanity will eliminate carbon emissions and will stabilize the climate relying on the fact that <a title="http://citizensclimatelobby.org/carbon-prices-around-world/" href="http://citizensclimatelobby.org/carbon-prices-around-world/"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://citizensclimatelobby.org/carbon-prices-around-world/">8 of the 10 largest world economies</span></a> are already charging for fossil fuel emissions. China has six operating regional cap and trade initiatives, plans to start a national system for pricing emissions soon, and will prohibit coal powered electricity generation in Beijing by 2020. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Yet, very often I veer again into despair. The Beijing coal plants will be converted to <a title="http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/8/5/china-to-ban-allcoaluseinbeijingby20201.html" href="http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/8/5/china-to-ban-allcoaluseinbeijingby20201.html"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/8/5/china-to-ban-allcoaluseinbeijingby20201.html">natural gas which is no better for climate change than coal</span></a> Missouri has 21 functioning coal plants, Kansas just issued permits for a new coal plant, and Florida&#8217;s Governor and Junior Senator deny anthropogenic climate change is happening. Seas are rising rapidly in the area. Some Miami streets flood with <a title="http://www.marketplace.org/topics/sustainability/miamis-flooded-future" href="http://www.marketplace.org/topics/sustainability/miamis-flooded-future"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.marketplace.org/topics/sustainability/miamis-flooded-future">sea water and sewage</span></a> during high tides. Residents will experience <a title="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/11/miami-drowning-climate-change-deniers-sea-levels-rising" href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/11/miami-drowning-climate-change-deniers-sea-levels-rising"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/11/miami-drowning-climate-change-deniers-sea-levels-rising">trouble flushing toilets</span></a> as water level rises. Ludicrously, <a title="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/11/miami-drowning-climate-change-deniers-sea-levels-rising" href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/11/miami-drowning-climate-change-deniers-sea-levels-rising"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/11/miami-drowning-climate-change-deniers-sea-levels-rising">Miami construction continues</span></a> as if it is a gigantic Ponzi scheme to maintain real estate prices. Climate change denial also <a title="http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/05/21/3439013/climate-deniers-sea-level-panel/" href="http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/05/21/3439013/climate-deniers-sea-level-panel/"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/05/21/3439013/climate-deniers-sea-level-panel/">props up real estate values</span></a> in coastal North Carolina.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Religiously, I redirect myself towards hope. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) routed an extremist primary opponent. Alexander&#8217;s victory is a hopeful sign because, during the campaign season, <a title="http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/Republican-Senator-Praises-Solar-Warns-of-Human-Caused-Climate-Change" href="http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/Republican-Senator-Praises-Solar-Warns-of-Human-Caused-Climate-Change"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/Republican-Senator-Praises-Solar-Warns-of-Human-Caused-Climate-Change">he toured a solar factory, acknowledging anthropogenic climate change,</span></a> acknowledging the need for emissions-free energy (solar, nuclear, bio), and acknowledging the need to <a title="http://grist.org/politics/2011-10-05-lamar-alexander-making-bipartisan-energy-progress/" href="http://grist.org/politics/2011-10-05-lamar-alexander-making-bipartisan-energy-progress/"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://grist.org/politics/2011-10-05-lamar-alexander-making-bipartisan-energy-progress/">eliminate fossil fuel companies special tax breaks</span></a> (above and beyond the breaks that all other corporations receive).</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">I commonly do penance for despair by reading a few more articles, writing several more letters to the editor. Did you know that <a title="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2014/08/07/when-the-koch-brothers-become-a-liability-for-republicans/" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2014/08/07/when-the-koch-brothers-become-a-liability-for-republicans/"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2014/08/07/when-the-koch-brothers-become-a-liability-for-republicans/">Senate candidate Gary Peters</span></a> (D-MI) is running on climate change? Peters pressed his opponent (Terry Lynn Land) to affirm climate change is caused by humans and requires action. He <a title="http://www.politico.com/story/2014/02/michigan-senate-race-2014-on-the-ground-103704_Page2.html#ixzz39j3AdlMQ" href="http://www.politico.com/story/2014/02/michigan-senate-race-2014-on-the-ground-103704_Page2.html#ixzz39j3AdlMQ"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.politico.com/story/2014/02/michigan-senate-race-2014-on-the-ground-103704_Page2.html#ixzz39j3AdlMQ">trailed by 3 points</span></a> six months ago, but is now up by 7. His campaign emphasizes Land receives campaign funding from Koch industries, the same Koch industries that stores piles of petroleum coke near residential Detroit neighborhoods. Voters seem to be responding to the <a title="http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/mgeertsma/setting_the_record_straight_on.html" href="http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/mgeertsma/setting_the_record_straight_on.html"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/mgeertsma/setting_the_record_straight_on.html">health risks</span></a> from exposure to petroleum coke dust, and to Peters&#8217; calls for climate action. <a title="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2014/08/07/when-the-koch-brothers-become-a-liability-for-republicans/" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2014/08/07/when-the-koch-brothers-become-a-liability-for-republicans/"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2014/08/07/when-the-koch-brothers-become-a-liability-for-republicans/">When the Koch brothers are a liability</span></a> to the Republican party, strong Republican leadership will be able to reassert traditional Republican environmental values. I see hope here, opportunities for people to learn and connect, improve their situation and steward the world. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Despair furtively makes me forget hope. Climate change deniers caused Congress to waste decades. In 1988 Dr. James Hansen testified before Congress about climate change. Since then, climate change progressed faster than scientists had warned based on almost every measure. Deniers persistently bombard the public with propaganda, destroying resolve, undermining hope. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;text-align: center"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Ps 27:3 says <i>“Though a camp is marshaled against me, my heart shall not fear.&#8221;</i></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">What is this military camp? Although the psalm means external enemies, <a title="http://www.jtsa.edu/Conservative_Judaism/JTS_Torah_Commentary/Avodat_Shofetim.xml" href="http://www.jtsa.edu/Conservative_Judaism/JTS_Torah_Commentary/Avodat_Shofetim.xml"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.jtsa.edu/Conservative_Judaism/JTS_Torah_Commentary/Avodat_Shofetim.xml">rabbinic commentators</span></a> suggest the enemy camp could be internal, our internal evil inclination. As some shun murder, adultery and swearing, I cold-shoulder despair. I reposition towards hope with the knowledge that Dr. Hansen left NASA to advocate full time for climate action. Despair, a weapon of the evil inclination, can be rebuffed. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">To this climate change activist, atoning and returning mean defending against despair. Surrendering to the idea that it’s too late for climate action, cannot lead to a good outcome. Devoting oneself to hope that there is still time allows advocacy and anger, curbs apathy, prevents hatred towards deniers, and ends alienation from people and nations who are in worse straits than we are. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<p><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Whatever your source of despair, whenever your heart shrinks from bold, firm action, remember atonement and returning to God means affirming hope. Remember <a title="http://www.funnyjokesbook.com/jokes/the-big-flood/" href="http://www.funnyjokesbook.com/jokes/the-big-flood/"><span style="color: #0433ff" title="http://www.funnyjokesbook.com/jokes/the-big-flood/">the old joke</span></a> about the man on the roof during rising floodwaters? Drown fear, squelch everything you know, grab the helicopter ladder, and be rescued.</span><br />

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Elul is here. It represents a chance for heightened introspection, an opportunity to do teshuva and improve our lives, before the “Days of Awe,” the days of judgment, the “High holidays” of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The shofar is blown every morning (except on Shabbat) in synagogues during the month of Elul to awaken us from slumber, to remind us to consider where we are in our lives and to urge us to make positive changes.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>How should we respond to Elul today? How should we respond when we hear reports almost daily of severe, often record-breaking, heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods, and storms; when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have reached 400 parts per million (ppm) for the first time in human history, far above the 350 ppm that climate experts believe is safe, when polar ice caps and glaciers are melting far faster than projections of climate experts; when some climatologists are warning that we could be close to a tipping point when climate change could spiral out of control with disastrous consequences, unless major changes are soon made; when we appear to also be on the brink of major food, water, and energy scarcities; and when, despite all of the above, so many people are in denial, in effect “rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic as we approach a giant iceberg”?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I believe that we should make it a priority to do all that we can to awaken the world to the dangers and the urgency of doing everything possible to shift our imperiled planet to a sustainable path. We should urge that tikkun olam (the healing and repair of the world) be a central focus in all aspects of Jewish life today.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We should contact rabbis, Jewish educators, and other Jewish leaders and urge that they increase awareness of the threats and how Jewish teachings can be applied to avert impending disasters. We should write letters to editors, call talk shows, question politicians, and in every other way possible, stress that we can’t continue the policies that have been so disastrous.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The afternoon service for Yom Kippur includes the book of Jonah, who was sent by God to Nineveh to urge the people to repent and change their evil ways in order to avoid their destruction. Today the whole world is Nineveh, in danger of annihilation and in need of repentance and redemption, and each one of us must be a Jonah, with a mission to warn the world that it must turn from greed, injustice, and idolatry, so that we can avoid a global catastrophe.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>My compost bins are so much more than just a place where compost happens. The area beside the three wire and wood bins is place where I often feel my father’s spirit – he was raised on a farm, and though he became a professional, gardening was in his blood, and he spent much of his spare time in his garden and his orchard.<br />
&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yet, it is not just the reminders of my father or the sense of his hovering spirit that gives meaning to my compost bins. They are symbolic of so much – which may be more the truer reason that I think of my father whenever I take out the compost.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We gardeners deposit plant food wastes, garden trimmings, and chopped up leaves into our compost bins. We let the rains come to add water, and from time to time we add a bit of soil. Then we let nature take its course, and before too long, all of that “waste” has turned into dark, crumbly humus that will enrich the soil of our garden. The leaves, the banana and orange peels, the corn husks – all this and so much more has been transformed from something seemingly useless, a by-product, into something good, useful, and enriching.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>And when my heart is feeling heavy, and I sit quietly beside my compost bins, I, too, get transformed. The grief and sadness in my heart are lifted, and I find myself once again able to be useful, to myself and to others. I am able to forge ahead into new territory. My relationship with the Holy One of Blessing has deepened.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This, in essence, is what <em>teshuvah </em>is about, turning the excess materials of our hearts and souls – those feelings of sadness, anger, jealousy, and more – into a deeper and closer relationship with G!d – re-turning to G!d – and in the process finding ourselves enriched.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It has been, I believe, through my connection with my father, who passed away almost 40 years ago, that I have learned to grieve. But grief is complex, it is not a one-time endeavor, it is a mosaic, and it returns, often when we least expect it. It shows up in new ways in response to new losses, so that frequently throughout our lives, something new and different needs to be transformed.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Thus it is for all of us, and thus it is in life. And so, our tradition provides the vehicle of the month of Elul leading up to Rosh HaShanah and all the days of the High Holidays, to give us the opportunity to let our compost be transformed, let our grief, fear, and despair be released, and let our hearts open wider, in an ever deepening relationship with the Mystery That Is.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Compost happens. May our transformation also happen.</p>

As we move forward in our chosen missions toward creating communities that feed, nurture and sustain (while protecting) all the inhabitants of the earth, I believe that it is also incumbent upon us to remain informed about the news of the day and the topics that affect underlying societal infrastructures.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Certainly, some of these infrastructures seem entrenched to the point of impermeability, none more so than the economic systems that govern world relations and, therefore, virtually every facet of our existence. For those of us concerned with environmental health and sustainability, there is possibly no greater challenge.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">During Elul, we embrace <i>teshuvah</i> and serve G-d by returning and adhering to our highest visions. It may seem daunting, but with <i>teshuvah</i> to guide us, we can redouble our efforts. And there is even more motivation and opportunity right now, as 5775 will be a <i>Shmita</i> year. </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">According to Hazon (&#8220;vision&#8221; in Hebrew), a New York-based nonprofit with six regional US offices, </span><i style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">Shmita</i><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">, which means ‘release,&#8221; is a Sabbatical year practice that allows arable</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif"> land to lie fallow while debts are forgiven, and the principles of an equitable and healthy society guide the management of agriculture and the economy.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;The <i>Shmita</i> cycle presents a cultural system rooted in local food security, economic resiliency and community empowerment,&#8221; Hazon&#8217;s <i>Shmita</i> segment states, as it advocates exploring and employing common ethics and values. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">This includes knowing the difference between &#8220;money and value.&#8221; An overabundance of goods leads to cheap prices, while scarce commodities are more valued. But according to Hazon, wealth, in<i> Shmita</i> practice, isn&#8217;t synonymous with currency: &#8220;Market capital is replaced with social capital and investments are made in long-term relationships.&#8221;</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">But how do we forge ahead in the face of a seemingly impermeable economic system that seems to be rooted in just the opposite ideology?</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Sometimes the answer is simply doubling down, and a coalition of Boston area environmental groups has done just that. An August 8 Boston Globe article by Jim O&#8217;Sullivan, &#8220;Green groups make move for more muscle,&#8221; </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">details the formation of MUSCLE (Mass. United for Science, Climate, Environment), a group effort being formed by the Environmental League of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters, Clean Water Action and the Sierra Club. According to the article, MUSCLE, whose members are tired of lip service with no results, plans to get environmentally focused nonprofits into state elections and legislative processes. This week, they will launch specific projects, including sharply messaged newspapers advertisements on climate change and youth-led efforts, and unveil 20 candidate endorsements in this fall’s races.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">As a coordinator of the Boston chapter of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, I sit on the Clean Water Action&#8217;s Alliance For a Healthy Tomorrow board. So for my own Elul teshuvah, I plan to become more involved in this effort. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;We weren’t going to be played with,&#8221; states former state representative and ELM head George Bachrach in the Globe article. Bachrach was one of three members who recently resigned in protest from the governor’s greenhouse gas reductions advisory council.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Getting back to the economy, the article ends by questioning how MUSCLE-affiliated labor unions are going to balance their participation with, for example, their members&#8217; potential roles in building the controversial Keystone pipeline.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">They might well look into Hazon guidelines for direction. By looking at the whole picture, and balancing immediate economic needs with long-term societal good, perhaps work opportunities can be found within a more sustainable, earth-nurturing energy field.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Recent revelations and lawsuits related to unprecedented surges in earthquake activity in US states where fracking is conducted (including 240 reported magnitude 3.0 or higher earthquakes in Oklahoma just this year), certainly give pause to the way we are approaching our energy needs.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;In your business and governing structures, as you make decisions that will affect others, consider the needs and voice of those who will be affected,&#8221; states Hazon. &#8220;Take into account all members of your community, especially those who are most vulnerable: the elderly, the sick, minorities with the community, and those with low-income. This is not charity. This is healthy community.&#8221;</span><br />

<p>The meteorologists predicted a possible heavy rainstorm and suggested bringing an umbrella to work.  But as I drove home from an interfaith conference, I got a call from my husband announcing: “ You’ll have to swim home – everything is flooded here.” My heart stopped beating for a minute when I heard this, realizing that all my rabbinic books and papers, many photograph albums including those from my parents’ lives in pre-Holocaust Europe, all our children’s albums and  memorabilia, my father’s award-winning black and white mounted photos, and beautiful maple wood furniture which pre-dated me – all that was DOWN THERE!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>But for now, I had to focus on getting home somehow &#8211; and indeed, the roadblocks on the main streets and highways were everywhere, with 12 feet of water at a nearby highway underpass near our home. Parking the car at a school several blocks away, I trudged through knee-deep water, only to find my husband standing waist-deep  in the middle of the lake created on our street, valiantly trying to hold back the debris so the storm sewers could drain in front of our house.  All the basements in our small suburb and several other surrounding ones had flooded with 3-5 feet of contaminated water. The irony of it all only hit me two days later when the curbsides where piled high with water-logged garbage – our community was nationally  known for being a leader in recycling ! – yet now was contributing to a huge increase of  landfill acreage with all these destroyed belongings.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Like Noah, I looked for signs of a renewal of life and dry land. This morning I found my “white dove” in the shape of the humongous white hydrangea trees and bushes and the fragrant white lily hostas blooming expansively in front of my house. Our garden did remind me that life  goes on and there is beauty and hope to be found around us, in just letting things go naturally.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As we enter the month of Elul, reflecting on what this all means and where we can improve our lives – and also entering the year of Shmita, of releasing the land to rest – I find several clear messages coming through:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>First: Live simply and examine  what you are “attached” to.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Second: We have had an Oral Tradition accompanying our Written Law – perhaps it is time for us to focus on this in a new way, relying on our memories to tell the stories, archiving what is really important on computer memory sticks, and relying on the vast internet libraries instead of creating our own paper jungles at home.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Third: Thank and show appreciation for our neighbors, friends, and families for whatever ways they support us; be on the lookout constantly for  ways to help others, quietly and in advance of a request.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Fourth: While we never can fully understand the ways of God, we  know that if we truly rely on God’s help and direction, it will come; let us be patient and trusting as our ancestors were when they could not plant for an entire year. We will survive – and even prosper!</p>

I am often looking for ways to connect to <em>teshuvah</em> even during the leisurely days of summer. <em>Teshuvah</em> for me is turning to those thoughts and actions that help me to become my better self, following those practices that nourish my growth to know peace &#8211; <em>shalom</em> &#8211; and to reach greater wholeness &#8211; <em>sh&#8217;lemut</em>. As I pursue personal growth, I resonate to the Hebrew word, <em>hitpatchut</em>, growth through an openness and receptivity to change.This summer I have focused on ways to practice with greater compassion in how I spend my time and focus my energy as I take on these goals.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>I resonated deeply with a spiritual writing that described the personal journey of a young man who made meaningful contributions to help alleviate suffering, first locally and then he volunteered in Peru with a health organization performing basic life-saving measures for the most needy. He realized that he could not SAVE them all, that whatever he does is a small amount given the needs and intensity of the impoverishment and sickness of those in dire circumstances. And his conclusion is similar to mine—that one cannot effect major changes, but we can become more aware that individuals in pain and need require compassionate responses. He called it a &#8220;ministry of silence&#8221;—being there, being present. I was motivated anew and started to participate in healing services for homeless people in my community in order to be a witness to their lives, to their small steps to heal, to be present as they were receiving some comfort and momentary relief during the service in which I participated. One homeless woman said to me — “it mattered to me that you were here” — that comment committed me to be there regularly.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>My involvement with a Jewish inmate (writing him for 9 years of his incarceration) meant helping him in a variety of ways in his re-entry into society after years of extreme deprivation of basic human decency, civility and concern, and consequently, he lacked the life skills that would enable him in succeeding. Being his &#8220;big sister&#8221; and listening to him and his travails and providing some financial assistance gave him an opportunity to acclimate somewhat to life on the outside (&#8220;I am physically out of prison but my mind is still shackled from the abuses&#8221;). There are few Schweitzers and Paul Farmers capable of performing their amazingly impactful service to humanity but there are endless opportunities to alleviate the hopelessness and abject suffering of individuals in our midst. We can offer a smile, and heartfelt caring that expresses joy when good things happen to them and offering advice and empathy when the challenges cannot be faced alone&#8211; communicating that &#8220;I am here now with you on your journey as you face and cope with life&#8217;s extreme difficulties.&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Participating in a weekly Buddhist meditation group adds to my sense of <em>teshuvah</em>, as it prepares me to practice deep listening, offering new ways to respond with compassion and kindness and caring by being mindfully present. My deep seated Jewish values and traditions inform how I address the pressing societal ills and illusive peace as I learn again and again to be present a little more each year.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>The world seems a little topsy turvy these days. A plane missing. 223 girls kidnapped in Nigeria. 3 teen agers kidnapped and murdered in Israel. A plane shot out of the sky. Israel in Gaza. Rockets in Israel. Too many children killed in the streets of Chicago. Too many deaths. When does it stop?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In the Fox River Valley, Illinois, after a punishing winter of epic proportions, it is nice to be outside. Six congregations, part of the nascent Prairie Jewish Coalition, sponsored the Topsy Turvy bus.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What is a topsy turvy bus? It is a school bus, bright yellow, with half of another school bus on top, welded together and running entirely on used food oil. It is a project of Hazon to draw attention to climate change.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Draw attention it does. You have never seen anything like it. Part school bus, part RV, part camper, five  people (and two support staff) are driving this bus from Colorado to Isabella Friedman Retreat Center in Connecticut.  Inside the bus there are sleeping quarters, a kitchen, storage space and even a library!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ben Cohen of Ben &amp; Jerry’s commissioned the bus. The first tour raised awareness of wasteful spending at the Pentagon. Maybe this Topsy Turvy bus can bring peace! The second tour promoted the White House Organic Farm project. So it makes sense that on a sunny, Sunday afternoon, my congregation, Kneseth Israel, and Pushing the Envelope Farm have come together to host this event.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The residents, drivers, educators engaged all ages who turned out. There were yummy blueberry smoothies made by a bicycle blender. Even better vegan chocolate chip cookies made with three different models of solar cookers. This led to an interesting debate about whether you could use a solar cooker to cook a chicken for Shabbat.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The solar cooking and the bicycle smoothies remind me that I want to install a solar <em>ner tamid</em>, eternal light at our synagogue.  The brainchild of Rabbi Everett Gendler, one of the first Jewish environmentalists, Temple Emanuel of the Merrimack Valley installed the first one in 1978. It raises awareness about the power of the sun and the need to protect our environment, to be caretakers with G-d, in this glorious creation..</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>People could tour Pushing the Envelope Farm, owned by Rabbi Fred Margulies and his wife Trisha who built the farm from spare acreage on their Continental Envelope Company land in Geneva, IL. They are using it primarily as a teaching farm, with programs for schools, synagogues, churches and scout troops. With 14 acres, there is an organic CSA, various crops and farm animals.  A portion of everything they grow goes to the nearby Northern Illinois Food Bank.</p>
<p>The kids who came loved playing with the chickens and the goats. They loved making their own smoothies and solar cooked cookies. I loved seeing the signs in English, Hebrew, Spanish. And while the bees are critically important, to sustainability and our celebrations of Rosh Hashanah, I gave them a wide berth as I hiked by.</p>
<p>But maybe what I loved most is how this Topsy Turvey bus got all of us—from six congregations and from two years old to eighty, outside on a beautiful, summer day. It would seem that the world is not so Topsy Turvey. Maybe there can even be peace.</p>

<p>A memory: Our newborn is up again. I turn to the clock. It’s 4:25 am. Less than three hours since she last awoke. My husband and I are exhausted, and we lie quietly for a few moments, willing our daughter back to sleep. But her cries are persistent. Who knows if she’s hungry, cold, or simply distressed and looking for comfort?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Regardless, we’ve reached our “give-her-a-moment” limit; there’s only so long one can ignore an infant baby’s cries. My husband grabs for his glasses, makes his way to the</p>
<p>nursery, and returns with our loosely swaddled howling bundle. He lays her beside me and her whimpers subside. She begins to nurse. We are calmed. At that moment, there is no more peaceful sound than the blissful rhythm of our baby sucking.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐-­‐</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The calf is born. Cold and disoriented, its mother nestles close to provide warmth; she guides her baby’s mouth toward her udders. The calf suckles and then falls asleep by its mother.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The mother and child remain this way, comforted, nurtured by each other’s presence. The calf awakes and drinks more of the colostrum, or early milk, from its mother. This liquid gold is rich in antibodies, essential for the health and growth of the baby calf, but not fit for human consumption. Within 24 hours, the calf has done its job, drunk all the colostrum. The cow’s milk fills her udders. This milk, unlike the colostrum, is valuable and will be collected for humans.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It is time; a farmhand waits until mother and baby are sleeping side-by-side, lifts the baby to its feet and nudges it away. The unnecessary cost has been removed; this calf, like all the others on this farm, is separated permanently from her mother. This calf will never again drink its mother’s milk.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Neighbors awake. They hear strange noises: indescribably, inhuman, and unrecognizable. The sounds are clearly coming from creatures in distress. Between midnight and 7:00 am, at least four neighbors alert the police. Officers are dispatched to the dairy farm to investigate the source of the eerie, troubling sound. Assurances are given that all is well.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This is just business as usual. The calf must not drink the profits. The cow and calf’s time together has ended. But maternal-child bonds are not easily broken. The separation causes extreme anxiety and suffering. The bellows emanate from the mother cow lamenting the separation from her baby. Gates will be check to ensure she is securely penned. It is not uncommon for a mother cow to trek for miles in search of her calf. Sadly, this pregnancy, birth, separation, commercial milk production cycle which is forced upon the cows continues. Lactation will not occur otherwise.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Dairy products are suffused with the suffering of a mother and a child separated and unable to soothe one another. I hear their cries and cannot ignore them.</p>
