				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Jewish Climate Action Network (JCAN) is sponsoring its first conference, a time for community members from across New England concerned about climate change to come together. The conference will focus on a Jewish response to climate change, ideas for action, and how climate change is fundamentally a social justice issue. It will provide organized opportunities to connect with others interested in working together.</p>
<p>Summery of the conference:</p>
<ul>
<li>Panel exploring what Judaism adds to our understanding and ability to respond to climate change</li>
<li>Two rounds of workshops, each of which will provide concrete information about a specific way to respond to the threat of climate change and to connect with others</li>
<li>Opportunity to speak with community organizations and businesses involved in environmental work</li>
<li>Special workshop for teens and tweens</li>
<li>Short wrap-up program highlighting what has been accomplished and providing a send off</li>
<li>Facilitation of informal gatherings for dinner at nearby restaurants those who want to continue the conversations.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Last chance to help us make Israel a greener, environmentally healthier land:</strong> Until the end of April you can vote online for the upcoming World Zionist Congress. The results determine, among other things, the division of power at the Jewish National Fund’s international board.</p>
<p>For the past decade I have sat on the JNF board, largely because of the support and intervention of the Green Zionist Alliance – a wonderful group of young environmentalists who decided to get involved and improve Israel’s environmental performance. This support has allowed me to represent them and pursue any number of important green initiatives which include:</p>
<p>· creating new sustainable forestry policies for the JNF,</p>
<p>· putting bike lanes on the organization’s agenda,</p>
<p>· creating a brand new “affirmative action” program to systematically reach out to Israel’s Arab minorities to finance environmental projects,</p>
<p>· increasing the organizational commitment to green building and solar energy,</p>
<p>· leading the fight to prevent JNF funding over the green line,</p>
<p>· expanding funding for forestry and agricultural research as well as river restoration projects, and</p>
<p>· fighting for good government and transparency.</p>
<p>There is a lot more that needs to be done. Whether or not I can continue depends on whether the “GZA” – or Aytzim as they call themselves these days gets enough votes. It only takes ten dollars to register and 3 minutes online to vote. (<strong>The polls close this Thursday April 30th). 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently, I&#8217;ve been more focused on teaching my baby to crawl than the state of the environment in Israel.   But even for us moms living inside the family bubble, there&#8217;s a world out there that sometimes needs our attention.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why I am proud to be part of the Green Israel slate for elections of the World Zionist Congress.  If you care about the environment in Israel and have not yet voted in the election, your vote can make a difference in a greener Israel.  You can vote here: <a href="https://myvoteourisrael.com/">https://myvoteourisrael.com/</a></p>
<p>The vote costs $10, which pays for the cost of the election only.  All Jews are eligible to vote.  <strong>The election ends on April 30.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Here’s a little more information about the WZC and the Green Israel slate:</strong></p>
<p>The World Zionist Congress exists to give Jews in the diaspora a voice in Israeli affairs.  Before 1948, the World Zionist Congress was the pre-state parliament of what would become Israel.  After Israel was established, most of its powers were taken over by the Knesset (Israel’s parliament).   But since all Jews have a stake in what happens in Israel, the WZC was retained to give diaspora Jews a voice.</p>
<p>The WZC retains considerable influence over several important institutions, including the Jewish Agency (which is involved in immigration), and the Jewish National Fund.  The JNF, which most people know as the organization that plants trees in Israel, owns 13% of the land in Israel.  Despite the identical name, the JNF in Israel is a separate legal entity from JNF in the United States.  It is the de-facto national forestry service of Israel.</p>
<p>Since its creation in 2001, with just a couple of seats, the Green Israel slate has passed seven laws at the Congress.  It has been able to use its position to appoint sustainability-minded members to the board of JNF in Israel, designate new nature preserves, quadruple the number of trees planted, and establish hundreds of miles of bike trails throughout the country.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Passover celebrates the exodus of the Jewish people from slavery to freedom.  It is also rooted in the agricultural cycle of the year and coincides this year with the beginning of spring. It references a time when our ancestors were more connected on a daily basis to the natural world.  To become more connected to the Earth and go “eco friendly” for this holiday, consider following all or some of the tips below:</p>
<ul>
<li>Help the environment by reducing waste as you empty your home of chametz (leavened foods such as breads, pastas, etc).  Give leftover bread and grain-based items to area food pantries rather than throwing them out.</li>
<li>Clean your house using environmentally friendly cleaning products. Consider brands such as Trader Joe’s or Seventh Generation. Or make your own cleaning product by combining water, lemon juice and a splash of vinegar.</li>
<li>As much as possible, buy your Passover fruits and vegetables from local, organic sources. This reduces your carbon footprint as you will not be purchasing produce flown in from hundreds of miles away. Cook with vegetables that are in season.</li>
<li>Use soy or beeswax candles for your Passover table.  These create less soot and are more sustainable than paraffin candles.</li>
<li> Avoid disposable plates and utensils.  If your level of observance requires using separate dinnerware during Passover, invest in purchasing separate dishes that you can use over again each year.  Don’t clog landfills by using plates, cups and cutlery that get thrown away after a single use.</li>
<li>Use washable napkins and a washable table cloth for your Seders. This is another way to reduce waste.</li>
<li>If travelling for Passover, consider carpooling with others and travelling at off-peak times to avoid wasting gas.</li>

<p><em>Harachaman hu yashiv libeinu el ha’aretz<br />

<p>הָרַחֲמָן הוּא יָשִיב לִבֵּינוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ לְמַעַן נֵשֵב יָחַד עִמָהּ בְּשָׁבְתהּ, כָּל שְׁנַת הַשְׁמִיטָה</p>
<p>The words of this blessing were written by Rabbi David Seidenberg. Nili Simhai made it into a singable liturgy by setting the words to the &#8220;Sosne Nigun&#8221; by Jonah Adels, z&#8221;l. (Listen to the song at <a title="Shmita Harachaman" href="http://www.neohasid.org/resources/shmita-harachaman">www.neohasid.org/resources/shmita-harachaman</a>.)Harachaman blessings come after the main part of the blessing after the meals, and they ask for special blessings, including blessings related to Shabbat and holidays. Sing it at your Tu Bish&#8217;vat seder and at every meal this whole Shmita year!</p>
<p>Shmita means &#8220;release&#8221;, and the Shmita year is about release or liberation for the land, liberation between the people and the land, and liberation between people themselves. This Harachaman blessing references all three kinds of liberation, and it does that by using three different verbs that include the letters Shin ש and Bet ב. The first, <em>yashiv</em>, comes from the word &#8220;turn&#8221;, <em>lashuv</em>, לשוב, and it refers to our returning to a right relationship on a heart level with the Earth. The second, <em>neishev</em>, comes from &#8220;to settle&#8221; or &#8220;dwell&#8221;, <em>lashevet</em>, לשבת, as in <em>shevet achim gam yachad</em> &#8212; how good it is for brothers and sisters to dwell together, and it refers to liberation between individuals in the year of release, when debts are canceled and food is shared. The third, <em>b&#8217;shovtah</em>, comes from <em>lishbot</em>, לשבות, to rest, and it refers to the shabbat that the land itself enjoys in the Shmita year, as it says, &#8220;the land will enjoy her sabbaths&#8221;. This is the true nature of tikkun olam: tikkun, repair and restoration, on all these levels together. That is what must happen to fix the world.</p>

<p><strong>Our Story</strong></p>
<p>While working on organic farms, we fell in love &#8212; with each other, and with the work of feeding people good food produced by farmers who love the work and the land.  We knew that the meat raised on pasture was not only of the highest quality and flavor, but also produced in a balanced ecosystem, with care for the land and the animals.  This was critical for Anna, a former vegetarian, who would only eat meat produced sustainably and ethically.  Naf, a serious carnivore from a young age, wanted pastured meat not just for the ethics, but for the unparalleled flavor of sustainably produced meats.</p>
<p>After serving kosher, pastured lamb, chicken, and goat at our wedding to rave reviews, we realized it was our calling to bring the delicious taste of kosher pastured meats to the wider Jewish community.  Naf learned the kosher meat business from the ground up, including training as a shochet. And in 2010, we founded Grow and Behold Foods on the same principles that guided the farm where we first met: delicious, nutritious food comes from farms that treat the entire ecosystem with respect.  It is our pleasure to bring the wonderful taste of pastured meat to your table.</p>

<p>On this third night of Hanukkah, we light three candles and continue to add to the “Litany of Harm” and the “Call to Action,” and we provide a third action to our personal list of ways in which to increase the sanctity of our lives and the lives of those around us.</p>
<p>Hanukkah Night 3:</p>
<p>We continue the Litany of Harm:</p>
<blockquote><p>For all those in island nations, where rising sea levels and superstorms threaten their very existence. We stand in witness!</p>
<p>For all coastal cities and villages, where storm swells and flooding put lives and homes at risk. We stand in witness!</p>
<p>For all those who suffer from tropical diseases, and those at risk from spreading diseases and heat waves. We stand in witness!</p>
<p>For farmers and all who eat, as droughts ruin crops, incomes, and food supplies. We stand in witness!</p>
<p>For people of color around the world, who are at risk from climate change and environmental injustice. We stand in witness!</p>
<p>For the human populations, plants, and animals who are losing or have lost access to enough fresh water.*</p></blockquote>
<p>We continue our Call to Action:</p>
<blockquote><p>We’re ready to act because we have a favorite place on earth that we want our great-grandchildren to experience. With love in our hearts, Compassionate One, move us to action.</p>
<p>We’re ready to act because somewhere we heard John Muir’s voice, reminding us that in the beauty of nature we see the beginning of creation. With beauty in our hearts, Creator, move us to action.</p>
<p>We’re ready to act because someone in our life once shared something with us – something we needed; something we could not live without – and we want to do the same for the next generation and beyond. With generosity in our hearts, Holy One of Blessing, move us to action.””</p></blockquote>
<p>And we add a third item for increasing holiness.</p>
<p>For the third night, we focus on our responses to people of color. Do we see the differences in how white people and people of color are treated? Do we see how our days are different from those who are different from ourselves? Are we ready and able to recognize and acknowledge our white privilege? And what do we do about all of this?</p>
<p>Here are my thoughts for this third night of Hanukkah:</p>
<p>Our G!d and G!d of our ancestors, give me strength on this third night of Hanukkah, and help me to re-dedicate myself to remembering that I am created in the image of the Holy One of Blessing, to eating organic, local food, and to speaking out about racism.</p>

<p>As we head into winter, the light changes and creates changes inside of us. Dusk descends upon the Earth earlier and dawn arrives later.  An evening walk takes us through luminous pockets of blue, white, red and green. For some, winter light brings a melancholy and longing for bright summer sunlight. For others, the candles and iridescent colored bulbs bring excitement and nostalgia.</p>
<p><strong><strong> </strong></strong></p>
<p>It is with this consciousness of light and its effects on the human condition that the Jewish people observe Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.</p>
<p><strong><strong> </strong></strong></p>
<p>During Hanukkah, we commemorate the triumph of the Maccabees over the Greeks in the 2nd century BCE.  When they rededicated the desecrated Temple, the Maccabees found only one cruse of oil left to light the ceremonial lamp.  That cruse of oil was only expected to last for one night; however, it lasted for eight days.</p>
<p><strong><strong> </strong></strong></p>
<p>What meanings can we glean from the miracle of the oil? Perhaps it is that no matter how abused or degraded an individual or a group may be, there is the capacity in it for more fire and light than one could ever imagine. Or maybe it is that triumph over oppression illuminates what is good.  We have what we need even if it doesn’t seem as though we have enough.  We can enter darkness in our world and in our souls knowing that we will endure, and that world has what it needs to illuminate truth, beauty and goodness.</p>
<p><strong><strong> </strong></strong></p>
<p>Congregation Har Shalom is getting ready to construct its outdoor hanukkiah, which we light each night in front of the synagogue.  What will be different about this year&#8217;s Hanukkah Festivities at Har Shalom?</p>
<p><strong><strong> </strong></strong></p>
<p>Generally the custom on Hanukkah is to light one candle for the first night, and one additional light each night until the eighth night when the hanukkiah is aglow with all eight branches burning brightly.  This custom was the custom of the School of Hillel.  A lesser known form of the ritual &#8211; that of the House of Shammai- is to light eight lights on the first night and one fewer each night until one candle remains lit.  This year, since it is a <i>shmita</i> or sabbatical year in which we allow fields to lie fallow as instructed by the Torah, our community has decided that we will light our public hanukkiah according to the lesser known tradition. This mirrors the shift away from production and cultivation of land which in our times can be construed as increasing consumption of energy and natural resources.  The lights of the universe and beyond will be felt most profoundly on the culminating 8th night instead of eight lights that are humanly constructed and lit.</p>
<p><strong><strong> </strong></strong></p>
<p>The sabbatical year occurs every seven years and provides the opportunity for a shift in perspective towards humility in which we can explore the non-dominant approach.   Our usual way of doing things is interrupted and we take some time to retreat into stillness.  From there, new approaches to address old problems arise, a welcome opportunity in this challenging year.  We hope you will join us in staring into the night sky and that you will be blessed with discernment, and the lights of awareness and new hope.</p>

As they start their work, join us in a vigil calling for meaningful progress toward a world safe from climate change.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hanukkah is a time where we celebrate the renewal of the eternal flame and rededication of the Temple.  It is a great time to rededicate ourselves to the goal of preserving God’s creation, conserving energy and helping the environment.  Here are a few things you can do leading up to, and during, the holiday to rededicate yourself to making the world more eco-friendly.</p>

<p>GO GREEN IN YOUR HANUKKAH GIFTING:</p>

<li><strong>Give Alternatives to “Stuff”</strong>:  Consider giving gifts that do not create waste.  Give a museum membership, tickets to a play or a certificate to a local restaurant.</li>
<li><strong>Buy Gifts at Fair trade stores</strong>:  One way to show that you care about the environment is to purchase gifts at fair trade stores.  Items you purchase typically are made by local artisans and buying handmade jewelry, bags and clothes from fair trade shops helps provide a living wage for these artisans. Typically products sold are made from natural and organic materials.</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Look for Gifts from your Favorite Environmental Organization:  </strong>Several national environmental organizations sell clothing, bags, calendars and similar items either online through their websites or at bookstores in your neighborhood.  A portion of the sales price benefits the organization and its environmental mission.</li>

<li><strong>Give Recycled Items</strong>:  Some locally owned stores carry items that have been recycled from other products.  This is a great alternative to a mass-produced present.  Your unique gift of recycled art, jewelry, a handbag or similar item will keep items out of landfills and offer your loved one something that is truly unique.</li>

<li>Make a healthier batch of latkes by using local, organic potatoes and onions and cage-free, organic eggs.  Look for a winter’s farmers market to buy your potatoes, onions and eggs.   In St. Louis, the University City Market in the Loop and the Maplewood Farmers Market  have winter hours.</li>

<li>Resolve as a household to conserve energy, identifying specific actions you can take over the next year.  This could include replacing conventional light bulbs with CFLs, starting a backyard vegetable garden in the spring or doing more walking and less driving as a family.</li>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thanksgiving, while an ecumenical holiday, is a great time to consider the Jewish principle of baal tashchit (do not waste).  There are many things you can do to make your celebration of this holiday more earth friendly.</p>
<p><strong>Reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible:  </strong>Try to buy only as much food as you need and look for food that either has no container or that has a container that can be recycled.  Plan to compost any non-meat food items that can&#8217;t be eaten (such as carrot peel) or that have to be thrown out after the meal.  Also plan to use reusable cloth napkins instead of disposable paper ones.</p>
<p><strong>Use local and organic products for your feast:  </strong>Most Thanksgiving meals focus on food that is in season.  Use organic and locally grown pumpkin for your pie.  Locally grown vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes and winter squash taste great and are plentiful this time of year.  Buying locally means that your food is not flown miles away wasting fossil fuels as it travels from across the country or another continent.  Eating organic food means that what goes on your plate will not contain traces of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.  If you plan to make a traditional turkey for the holiday, buy one that is from a family farm that does not use antibiotics or artificial hormones.</p>
<p><strong>Celebrate at home:  </strong>Thanksgiving is one of the holidays when many people travel by car or plane.  Do your part to reduce global warming by planning to celebrate at home for a more green holiday.  Your stress level also will decline as you avoid crowds on the highways or airport terminals.</p>
<p><strong>Make your own decorations:  </strong>If you plan to decorate your home (inside or outside) for the holidays, use simple compostable or recyclable materials to create your decorations rather than buying new ones.  Consider picking up pine cones and leaves and using these in a centerpiece for your table.  Have your children cut construction paper into turkeys, pilgrims or other Thanksgiving themed designs.  (The paper can be recycled when done.)</p>
<p><strong>Give thanks to nature as you celebrate:  </strong>In many households, those attending the Thanksgiving meal go around the table and give an example of what they are thankful for.  Add a new twist by also thanking the natural world around you for helping to sustain and enrich your life.  Weather permitting, consider a short nature or garden walk before or after the meal to make the connections between this food-centered holiday and the earth around us more visible.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are three places in the Torah which talk about human beings and the animals – including wild animals – sharing one food supply. In Eden, in the ark during the flood, and in the Sabbatical year or Shmita. There’s a lot more to these stories, but you don’t really need to know much more to understand the basic message of the Torah.</p>
<p>We lived with the wild animals once, rather than carving out separate spaces for us and our domesticated fellow travelers. According to the Torah, that is the real truth, and all the owning and property and buying and selling is an illusion. We can return to that truth during Shmita, when we get to root ourselves in a real way in the land – not by owning it by being with it. Not by fencing it but by taking down fences. Not by hoarding but by sharing everything, with all the creatures.</p>
<p>Here are the relevant verses about eating:</p>
<p>In the garden of Eden, “God said: Here, I have given to you all every plant seeding seed which is on the face of all the land and every tree which has in it tree-fruit seeding seed, for you all it will be for eating, and for every wild animal of the land and for every bird of the skies and for every crawler on the land in which there is a living soul (<em>nefesh chayah</em>), every green plant for eating. And it was so.” (Genesis 1:29–30)</p>
<p>In the story of the flood, “God said to Noah: …from all life from all flesh, two from all you will bring unto the ark to keep them alive with you, male and female they will be. From the bird by their species and from the animal by her species from every land crawler by their species, two from all you will bring unto you to make them live. And you, take for you from all the food which is eaten, and gather unto you, and it will be for you and for them for eating.” (Genesis 6:19–21)</p>
<p>And in the laws of the Shmita or Sabbatical year, it says, “<em>YHVH/Adonai</em> spoke unto Moshe in Mt. Sinai, saying: You all will come into the land which I am giving to you, and the land will rest, a Shabbat for <em>YHVH/Adonai</em>…And the shabbat-growth of the land will be for you all for eating: for you and for your male servant and for your female servant and for your hired worker and for your settler living-as-a-stranger with you; and for your animal and for the wild animal which is in your land, all of her produce will be to eat.” (Leviticus 25:6–7)</p>
<p>There is a debate among the the earlier rabbis, about whether the tree fruit in Eden was just for the human beings and the grass for the animals, or whether it was all for all of them. Nachmanides says that humans dined separately, but Rashi says that it truly was one family sharing one food supply. As for the ark, according to the midrash Noah had to create one great store of every kind of food, because each animal needed its own sustenance, and Noah and his family had to spend every hour of the day feeding the animals, since some ate at dawn and some during the day, some at dusk and some at night.</p>
<p>After the flood, in between the ark and Shmita, comes the tragedy of human history. The wars and usurpations, enslavements and empires, the amassing of gold and land by some and the impoverishment of others. And in between the two are also the tragedies of our relationship to the wild animals: not just using but abusing, extinguishing whole species, and losing touch with our own wild selves.</p>
<p>That’s reflected in the flood story: when Noah and family emerge from the ark, they are told that “a terror of you and a dread of you will be over every wild animal of the land and every bird of the skies, everything which crawls the ground and all the fish of the sea, into your hands they are given. All that crawls which lives, for you it will be for eating – like green plants I have given all to you all. Just don’t eat flesh with its soul, its blood.” (Genesis 9:2–3)</p>
<p>This is no blessing but a curse. And it is no dominion: according to one interpretation, the meaning of dominion in Eden was that when Adam would call to the animals, they would come to him. Now it would be the opposite – they will run away in terror. (“Rashi” on <em>B’reishit Rabbah</em> 34:12)</p>
<p>One question for us today, in this year of Shmita, is: how can we get ourselves back to the garden? Back before our fellowship with the animals was lost? That can’t mean turn the hands of the clock back on history. Shmita answers a slightly different question: how do we get back to the garden as grownups, after having eaten from the tree of knowing good and evil? It’s not about feigned or renewed innocence, but rather about knowing our power to destroy, and not exercising that power. It’s about finding fellowship with the land and the other animals. And above all, it is about finding rest – rest from ourselves, and rest with each other, with all the other ones that inhabit the land.</p>
<p>A midrash says that during the twelve months in the ark, Noah “did not taste the taste of sleep, not in the day and not in the night, for he was busy feeding the souls that were with him.” (<em>Tanchuma Kadum Noach</em> 2) Another midrash, says that when God was setting up the world, the earth heard God say, “It’s not good, the human being alone” and she realized this meant that human beings would begin to reproduce. Then the earth “trembled and quaked”, saying, “I do not have in me the strength to feed the flocks of humanity.” God promised the earth to feed humanity at night with sleep, and so share the burden with her. (<em>Pirkei d’Rabi Eliezer</em> ch. 12)</p>
<p>In our society, where almost everyone is racing to keep their jobs or make money or outcompete, we don’t really let ourselves sleep. As a society we never rest. We don’t get enough of this divine food. And it’s not because like Noah we are feeding all the creatures. But here’s what this midrash teaches us: a humanity that never rests is a humanity cut off from the unconscious, cut off from its divine sustenance, and it is a humanity that will destroy the earth.</p>
<p>It is time for us to rest, and to dream, as a whole society: Shmita.</p>
<p>It says in Proverbs 11:30, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and one who acquires souls is wise.” These souls are the animals, the midrash teaches, and it was because Noah was capable of caring for them that he was worthy of being saved from the flood. (<em>B’reishit Rabbah</em> 30:6) Are we worthy?</p>
<p>It also says in Proverbs 12:10, “A righteous person knows the soul of his animal.” It is time to practice this righteousness. Not just with the other animals, but also with ourselves. How will we know the soul of this animal within us? How will we make peace within, with each other, and with the land? How will we dream our animal dreams again? That is the door Shmita opens for us. That is the ark Shmita builds for us. And I believe that is how we get back to the tree of life in the garden.</p>

<p>Here’s a quick bit of Sukkot Torah to start us off: “The four species of the lulav represent the four types of ecosystems in the land of Israel: desert (date palm), hills (myrtle), river corridors (willow), and <em>sh’feilah</em>, the lowlands (etrog). Each species has to be fresh, with the very tips intact – they can’t be dried out, because they hold the water of last year’s rain. Together, they make a kind of map of last year’s rainfall, and together, we use them to pray for next year’s rains.” I hope everyone enjoys the wonderful array of activities and ideas we are generating. <p>Our synagogue will break ground during Sukkot on a 1/2 acre urban farm on our property, in cooperation with a local NGO. The farm will be fully managed by the NGO at no cost to us, and all workers are paid a living wage. The produce grown will be available for purchase to our congregation and sold at farmers markets in the area. A portion will be dedicated to those who are food insecure. Question for everyone: Do you know of any other synagogues who have dedicated their land in a similar way?  Please note this is not an urban garden, but a functioning not-for-profit commercial project.</p>

<p><strong>Oct 6</strong>, at 5:30 pm, family sukkot program, in partnership with the south Denver JCC <strong>Oct 12</strong>, at 4:00 and 7:00 pm, screenings of “<a href="http://www.boulderjcc.org/events/2233/2014/10/12/boulder-jcc-events-calendar/special-film-screening-and-community-celebration-road-to-eden-rock-and-roll-sukkot/">Road to Eden</a>”, co-sponsored with the Boulder JCC <strong>Oct 16</strong>, Sukkot Mishpacha, a program for young families at a local organic farm Rabbi Julian Sinclair stopped in Denver/Boulder on his recent book tour promoting Shabbat Ha&#8217;aretz; we hosted five programs with him earlier this month. We are leading a shmita hike for local staff of Jewish organizations to help them decompress from the hectic time of the high holidays. We expect that many shmita-related programs will arise throughout the year but we don&#8217;t yet know what they will be.</p>

Moishe Kavod is planning to run a series of learning and DIY sessions on shmita starting in November, with focuses on economic justice, food and ag system, and chesed/caring community principles.</p>

<p><strong>Sun Oct 12</strong>, 4-6 PM, screening of the film &#8220;Fire Lines&#8221;, about joint Israeli and Palestinian fire fighting efforts during the Carmel fire of December 2010. The film includes environmental themes as part of the reason for the fire was overforestation of the affected area. The director, Avi Goldstein, will speak after the film.  In partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council, Webster University and the JCC.</p>

<p>For Sukkot we do a 4 year rotation focusing on different aspects of the holiday.  The first year of the cycle we invite the <em>ushpizin</em> and have the 7 species at a festive meal.  The second year we look at wind with kite flying as a major activity, the third at rain and water, and the last year at stars and shade. Each exploration is done both from the Judaics side with text study and from the science/experiential side. This year we are looking at water.  For the K to 3rd graders, teachers act out the story &#8220;Why Does it Rain on Sukkot&#8221;, MS. Frizzle (science teacher) comes to teach about rain &amp; why it&#8217;s needed, then students rotate through stations that are led by 4th graders and teachers.  At the stations they investigate kosher tops for pipework sukkot, create rain sticks, have various water activities &amp; races, sing songs &amp; learn the dance &#8220;Mayyim&#8221;.  For the 5th to 8th graders, they start with an appropriate text study.  Then, the 6th through 8th graders become the instructors teaching the other grades about the aspect of water that they researched and created a project for.  6th graders look at the water cycle, which they present through posters, dioramas, etc.  They also perform a song and skit on the water cycle.  7th graders research water pollution &#8211; causes, effects, and possible solutions.  8th grade engineering students investigate flooding &#8211; causes, effects, how engineers have created solutions.  8th grade honors biology students investigate droughts, concentrating on trouble spots in the Western US, Israel &amp; the Middle East, and Africa.  They also look at causes, effects, &amp; possible solutions.  Then we have a <em>Simchat Beit HaShoava </em>– the biblical Water Libation ceremony which took place during Sukkot in Temple times, with students singing, dancing, juggling, filling pools with golden pitchers, etc.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Planning a simcha, such as a wedding, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, or bris, offers many opportunities to make an environmental impact.  Every choice you make in planning your event can be a chance to make a statement about the importance of respecting and preserving God&#8217;s creation, the Earth.</p>
<p>Here are some ideas of ways to reduce waste as you prepared for the big day.</p>
<p>Reduce paper use:  Consider using the Internet for all or some of your announcements about your event.  Invitations can be sent electronically.  RSVPs also can be sent to a specially designated email address rather than by using a pre-printed card.  If you prefer to use a printed invitation, use recycled unbleached paper and soy-based ink.  For a wedding or B&#8217;nai Mitzvah, consider creating your own app and/or website with information on where to stay and what to do for out of town guests, rather than printing this information.</p>
<p>Be eco-friendly in your decor:  Use real china plates and reusable cups and glassware, rather than items you throw away.  If you are considering flowers, order those locally grown and in season, rather than buying from a florist who will order items flown from far away.  Another alternative is to decorate with plants, which can be kept and planted or re-potted after the event.  Make your own centerpieces from recycled items.</p>
<p>Food:  Where possible, use a caterer who relies on locally sourced, organic food. Consider purchasing fair trade coffee and tea for the reception.  Find out if it is possible for food waste to be composted. For pre-wrapped items, such as bagels or sandwiches, do not open unused wrapped food unless or until needed.  Unused wrapped food can be donated to area food pantries if not eaten, reducing waste and helping those in need.</p>
<p>Energy use:  Hold the ceremony and reception at the same location or have the events at locations not far from one another, to reduce travel and minimize gas use.  Encourage your guests to carpool to your event.</p>

<p>Ma&#8217;yan Tikvah celebrates the High Holidays in the woods with morning services on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur as well as Kol Nidre services on Erev Yom Kippur. The services are led by Rabbi Katy Allen and are a combination of traditional and nontraditional; they are informal and participatory for those who wish to add their voices. Morning services are held outside, or if the weather requires it, under an outdoor pavilion. There is time to sing, to appreciate the natural world around us, to meditate and pray, to read and discuss the Torah portion, to hear the sound of the Sofar on Rosh HaShanah, and to remember our loved ones during Yizkor on Yom Kippur. On the first day of Rosh HaShanah, our services are followed by a pot-luck lunch and then tashlich.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We will have a very different service on the second day of Rosh HaShanah &#8211; a hike interspersed with meditations, prayers, discussion, and the blowing of the shofar, and the day will include a picnic lunch &#8211; bring your own. We will through the fields and woods and end with a picnic near the Sudbury River.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Our Kol Nidre service is mostly indoors, but if weather permits we go outside for part of the service. We will also have a short Neilah service at the end of Yom Kippur followed by a pot-luck break-fast. All are welcome, including families with children. The sites for the first day of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur are handicap accessible.</p>

<p>There’s a precious community garden nestled between buildings on a crowded cobblestone street high up in the city of Tzvat, Israel. It began 18 years ago as a memorial community garden, in memory of a son who passed too soon, and it became a <a href="http://www.safed.co.il/stevens-garden.html">city landmark</a>. Today this sacred place, enjoyed by and open to all, is receiving loving <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/steven-s-garden">support</a> toward renewing the shared space.</p>
<p><b>The Garden Seeds: Untimely death of a son, grief of a mother, new friendship</b></p>
<p>First, a mother was seeking a way to honor her son who was killed by cancer as a teenager 20 years ago this past spring. Shirel Levine was considering planting a tree in his memory as she was grieving over her tremendous loss, as an American living in northern Israel. She met the wife of her doctor, and this righteous woman Tamar Bittelman (of blessed memory) expressed a deep compassion with Shirel for the loss of her son. Within 10 minutes of their first encounter, Tamar suggested a garden, and she offered to help set it up.</p>
<p>Steven’s Garden in Tzvat was first established with much communal involvement. The grand opening involved the unveiling of a mural, live music, food and celebration. Tamar and her husband Noach built the first garden beds and then weekly taught local children how to plant and grow food there. The garden lived on, and has been maintained over the years at a low-cost for the benefit of the community.</p>

<p>Somehow Steven’s Garden reached me throughout the years as I reside in the Western US. When I lived in Tucson in the 1990’s, I knew Steven’s sister and so our mutual friend <a href="http://gardeninc.org/">Susan Silverman</a> &#8211; also a gardener &#8211; ecstatically informed me about this sweet community garden when she visited Tzvat some years later. I personally met Tamar Bittelman in 2004 when I moved to the East Bay in California where she was teaching kindergarten. It wasn’t until 2010 that I discovered Tamar was a founder of Steven’s Garden, when my daughter’s kindergarten class at Oakland Hebrew Day School raised funds as a tzedaka project for Steven’s Garden, and purchased a lemon tree that was planted there. I visited Israel in 2011 for the only time ever with my children, and we visited the tree. Several young yeshiva bochers were enjoying the garden, sitting with their siddurim and chatting reclining on the bench under the mural. It was a joy to finally see this garden for myself, right across the street from the famous <a href="http://www.kosmic-kabbalah.com/">Kabbalah artist David Friedman</a>’s studio.</p>
<p><b>Tamar </b><b>Bittelman Tzeddekes: The Garden Founder’s Legacy</b></p>

<p>Tamar Bittelman was not only a kindergarten teacher but was also a co-founder of the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beit-Midrash-Ohr-HaChaim/298257777341?sk=info">Beit Midrash Ohr HaChaim</a>, a unique unaffiliated independent Torah-learning center located in Berkeley, California from 1998 &#8211; 2012 under the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Herschel Yolles, the Samborer Rebbe z”l. Tamar started numerous gardens during her life, including a garden adjacent to Congregation Beth Israel in Berkeley before its renovation in 2004.</p>
<p>Tamar’s Tzvat garden legacy is an echo of the story of her grandmother, Esther Beker Reinin of the pioneering Sturman family who was part of Hashomer, an original Jewish defense organization in Palestine first established in 1909. Beker Reinin was part of the historic security organization, serving on horseback protecting the sprouting Jewish settlements. She was also involved in an agricultural school in Israel. Every year at the Beit Midrash Ohr HaChaim in Berkeley, Tamar would sponsor a kiddush to honor the anniversary of her grandmother’s passing, and she would retell stories. There was even a story of when Tamar was walking along a road in a kibbutz in Israel, and a some old-timers walked by her and stopped, and told her, “You look just like Esther Beker Reinin.”</p>
<p>Many of today’s Jewish environmentalists have met Steven’s Garden’s founder Tamar Bittelman. Tamar attended the 2011 <a href="http://jewcology.org/author/Hazon/">Hazon</a> Food Conference in Davis, California where her husband Noach Bittelman the Acupuncturist presented on Jewish health and spirituality, the Earth, and the Holy Land. One year after we attended the Food Conference, Tamar edited my first blog article for Times of Israel, where I recounted a special woman’s circle that we held at the Hazon event, in the broader context of <a href="http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/redeeming-humanity-the-jewish-approach-to-women/">women’s central role in redemption</a> of the world according the Jewish tradition.</p>
<p>Tamar and Noach Bittelman moved back to Northern Israel from California in 2012. During her last visit to Berkeley one year ago, Tamar was excited to learn of my newest project, a Hazon CSA which is in its inception stages and includes in its food security concept residential and communal gardens, and a pop-up kosher vegan soup and salad restaurant. She made an extra call to me during her trip to share her enthusiasm for <a href="http://www.youngurbanmoshav.org/">Young Urban Moshav</a>, and agreed to serve on the Board of Directors.</p>
<p>Sadly, and to the shock of many who have declared her righteousness, Tamar passed away unexpectedly after returning to Israel, on a holy Shabbos during daavening 24 Shvat 5774 (January 25, 2014.) Tamar’s family has set up <a href="http://www.razoo.com/story/Hamorah-Tamar-Kindergarten-Scholarship-And-Educational-Fund">HaMorah Tamar Kindergarten Fund</a> at Oakland Hebrew Day School in her memory. Tamar is buried in Tzvat, the same city in Israel where Steven’s Garden, which she founded 18 years ago, continues to grow.</p>
<p><b>The Memorial and the Garden Renewal</b></p>
<p>Steven’s mother described on <a href="http://radiofreenachlaot.blogspot.com/2014/08/save-stevens-garden.html">Radio Free Nachlaot</a> in August 2014 how others recount to her that they feel Steven’s beautiful energy in the garden. A memorial garden is an example of the environment as habitat outside our bodies for our emotion, spirituality, and communal sharing. It is a place of comfort and healing.</p>
<p>Steven’s Garden holds the empathy of a woman hearing another woman grieving for her lost son, the generosity of creativity that builds and enriches the community, and comfort for mourners. It is a legacy of a grandmother and then granddaughter who loved, guarded and nurtured Eretz HaKodesh and the people of the land.</p>
<p>Community gardens can serve many functions, and Steven’s continues to hold potential for many possibilities. <p>I am in my favorite place at my favorite time: in the garden, in the morning, before the cars have started up, before the noise of lawnmowers and leaf blowers. The crickets are singing, the birds responding. The rising sun’s light filters through the leaves. A beginning.</p>

<p>It has been a tough year in the garden. An endless winter caused a late start and temperatures have been cooler than usual. A call from critter to critter that I cannot hear lets them know there is bounty on my corner. Maybe it’s because the peach tree lost its flowers in a hard spring rain, but squirrels have eaten a fair amount of my produce this year, taking a bit of a turnip and leaving the rest (yeah, I’m not surprised). Mice, too, have traversed here. I have never seen one, but my garden helpers have. Let’s not forget the birds.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the same time, the blackberries went wild. Literally. I have cut them back and dug up new plants several times. Cucumbers abound. Arugula sings its symphony. The carrots are fat and rich. I could go on. But what hits me this year is the contrast between disappointment and satisfaction; the moments of wondering why I do this at all, pitched against the incredible feeling of gratitude when I bag up 4 bags of produce filled with veggies, fruits and herbs, for our local food pantry. When neighbors come by and tell me they’ve been feasting on the blackberries. Who wouldn’t?</p>

<p>This is the rhythm of the Elul and High Holy Day season, the time when we take stock. How many things did not turn out the way we wanted them to this year? How many grapes did we plant that turned sour? (Most have mine have been chomped on by critters.) What do we do? Do we become depressed or disheartened? Angry? Do we give up? Or do we plant more seeds?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Perhaps we do all of the above. Perhaps we need to feel the grief and disappointment of our losses and our failures. Perhaps we need to feel the frustration. But Elul and the High Holy Day season tell us this is only part of the process. For us to fulfill the essence of this time of year demands that we somehow find a way to get to the other side. Maybe that includes a change of project, or maybe it means finding a new way in the same project.</p>

<p>I sometimes think that it is all the difficulties involved in growing food that inspired our Jewish ancestry to move away from its agricultural roots. This was revived, however, with the kibbutz movement in Israel’s pioneer days, and is experiencing further revival all over the Jewish world today. As we demand more sustainable lifestyles and healthier, more affordable foods, we are revitalizing our synagogue and neighborhood networks to feed ourselves and the hungry around us.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Even as I write this I observe a critter that has found her way into the grapevines. I go over to see the culprit. A squirrel. She takes her time untangling herself from the vines, climbs up the adjacent telephone pole, and when far enough away from me to rest in safety, turns. I see the bulge in her mouth. She takes out her dessert – a nice, fat purple grape, and eats it in front of me.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Not all of our plans will fruit the way we hope or plan. But this is the season to harvest the best of our works this year, and to plan and plant again, for a fuller, richer, more bountiful harvest in the year to come.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>May your Elul and the year to come be rich with new ideas and renewed energy to plant and see them bear fruit.</p>

<p>I am jostling in a vikram, in a small car that must have the air conditioning switched to off in order to make it up the Himalayan Mountain where love calls</p>

<p>I am exhausted</p>
<p>I am exhilarated</p>
<p>I am joyful</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I am fretting as we weave ourselves up the steep slope and you can see where the cars have already fallen off the cliff</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I am terrified when I come upon a mighty pack of horses thrown into the road that barely fits one car—</p>
<p>Let alone the screaming families that want to test their fate on these trails that have seen no rain yet— not me</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I am sore</p>
<p>I am flexible</p>
<p>I am sleepless and full of thoughts; I need a vacation from my mind</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This landscape that changes when I turn the corner now, the next moment and the moment after that, this landscape is heavy and full and I feel that way—</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I’d like to speak about Joy.  I know that Elul is upon us; a time for relentless self-reflection, spurred on by the blasts of shofar.  And yet, the rabbis in their complexity have added another dimension to Elul, Love. Remember the acronym for Elul?  It’s from the Song of Songs, <em>Ani l’dodi v’dodi li </em>- I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.  Reciprocal love is spiraling back and forth right here in Elul along with our lists of how we missed the mark.  Isn’t this worthy of attention?  What might it mean?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I’m not sure, but it’s certainly not insignificant.  Rabbi Akiva said that if all of Tanach (the five books plus all the prophets plus all the writings) is the Holy Temple, then the Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies!  The Song of Songs is sensuous and loving, filled with sexual desire and yearning; lovers are seeking fulfillment on every page.  We all know that steamy passion can easily burn and destroy, and yet, Rabbi Akiva holds this up as the archetypal place of holiness.  Blessed Be.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This is why I’m turning to joy this Elul.  The Song of Songs is reminding us that loving and desirous energy defines our relationship with the world, with the Source of Life.  Far from being unrequited, it is given back fully.  And then, when I receive the love I’m desiring, I feel fully me, fully seen, feeling even fuller than me!  I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.  This face of loving joy is also a face of Teshuvah.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I heard that the great psychoanalyst Milton Ericson tells a story of a mean nasty man who never smiled.  He became thunderstruck and lovesick with the new school teacher in town.  He asked to see her formally, and she said, only if you clean up your ways and try to smile once in awhile.  The goofiest grin came over his face, kindness filled his heart and he never looked back.  They lived happily ever after, smiling and holding hands like young fools until the end of their days.  Who says love is not powerful!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>But wait, if Rabbi Akiva is saying that this great love is our birthright, then it also means there is nothing to earn.  I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.  Our very natural relationship with the world itself is to love and be loved in return merely because we are alive!  Why is it so hard to imagine and carry this intense level of joyful loving?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><em>Teshuvah</em> can help me learn the ways that I actively block this joyous knowing; the many ways that I pickle myself in worry and bewitch myself in fear.  The ways we are unaware that our lifted hand blocks the sun and yet we can only whine and wonder why the light is so dim.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The social scientist Brene Brown adds another facet.  She asked why is it so hard to maintain our joy?  Her research discovered our fear of the vulnerability that leads to grief.  She noticed a widespread and uncanny ability to use fantasies of disaster to try and inoculate ourselves.  You know, the way we can look at something beautiful and say, ‘uh-oh, what’s coming’.  The sad truth is that these fantasies do not protect us at all, they just rob us of our joy.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Amazingly, her remedy, her <em>tikkun</em> is gratitude.  Practices of gratitude in the moment; utterances of thankfulness for what is here right now, irregardless of what may happen in the future.  Hmmmh, the rabbis teach that 100 blessings a day keeps the Dr. away (or something like that-smiles). A good practice for Elul, eh?  With blessings of gratitude, I can remember the utter uniqueness that is life; the perpetual joyous singing that is the symphony of the natural world.  Fortified with joy, I can face the stark truth about the many ways that I and my community inflict personal and planetary harm.  Like Milton Ericson’s mean man, If I’m bathed in love who knows what I will be capable of!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Let the Joy deeds of gratitude be fruitful and multiply! As Rumi said, “Let the beauty we love be what we do.  There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.”  In the name of Joy, let’s bless all that we hold precious… the Rabbi’s blessings, yes, and even more!  A child’s song, a friends laughter, cooking (and eating) a special meal for/with loved ones, silent welcoming of dawn and dusk, calling good morning to the birds, saying Shehechianu when the Junco’s come in the fall and the constellation Orion appears overhead, when the chicory blooms in July and the tomatoes ripen in August are all for me special joyful moments worthy of honoring with a blessing of gratitude.  What other myriads of blessings would you like to add?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>May your Elul be meaningful and filled with the joy that only love can bring.  Here’s a joyous love poem adapted from psalm 150.</p>

<p>Ecology and economy, spirituality and social justice are directly connected in our Jewish values of <em>heshbon</em> (accountability).  Every time we open our wallets or check our bank balances, we face issues of <em>heshbon </em>— no less than when we search our souls (<em>heshbon hanefesh</em>) during this Season of Turning.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>How are we “spending” each day of our lives?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The ancient sage Ben Zoma (<em>Mishnah Avot</em> 4:1) taught that the wise are those who learn from every person; the brave are those who control (literally, “occupy”) their own impulses; the rich are those who rejoice in their own portions; and the honorable are those who honor creation and its creatures.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This integrated four-fold teaching offers a blueprint for sustainability in the coming year of <em>sh’mitah</em> / release.  Each of us can learn how to appreciate our abundance, to moderate our consumption, to discern which of our expenditures truly honor creation and its creatures — and to control our impulses regarding those purchases that do not.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Agricultural rhythms of tithing through the sabbatical cycle have given us the financial ethics of wealth redistribution on a proportional basis.  In order to share our wealth proportionately today, we need clarity about our actual discretionary spending and our place in the world economy.  Membership in the global “one percent” is a surprisingly low bar for affluent Americans — and experience has shown that peer support is needed to bring this spiritual, financial and environmental <em>heshbon</em> to the next level.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Welcome to <em>Nedivut Tzedek</em> / Generous Justice, an intergenerational network of Jewish learning circles for just giving.  Our circles renew the Jewish values and practices of <em>heshbon </em>through study, storytelling, supportive action / reflection, and cultural development.   Participants learn how we vote with our daily money choices for the state of our world, and how to mobilize the power of those choices for social change as well as for greater personal fulfillment.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Generous Justice circles are taking root within local communities through a series of local outreach programs, building momentum toward a retreat-based leadership training in August 2015.  A resource manual will be available beyond the 2015 training to extend the reach of Generous Justice to additional communities of concern.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When our personal <em>tzedakah</em> meets the ethical metric of proportional giving, we discover how much we can really afford to contribute toward the causes most important to us.  After that, setting distribution priorities becomes a process of ongoing action / reflection in the service of change.  We put our money where our mouths, hearts and minds are, making thoughtful course adjustments as appropriate — and we let the earth rest from our relentless consumption.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Throughout the coming sabbatical year, Generous Justice will bring together Jews across generations, income levels, personal temperaments, spiritual orientations and political ideologies to support each other in realizing our full giving potentials.  Like our ancestors, we will start from wherever we are, with whatever we have — and keep the issues in proportion.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>My compost bins are so much more than just a place where compost happens. The area beside the three wire and wood bins is place where I often feel my father’s spirit – he was raised on a farm, and though he became a professional, gardening was in his blood, and he spent much of his spare time in his garden and his orchard.<br />
&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yet, it is not just the reminders of my father or the sense of his hovering spirit that gives meaning to my compost bins. They are symbolic of so much – which may be more the truer reason that I think of my father whenever I take out the compost.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We gardeners deposit plant food wastes, garden trimmings, and chopped up leaves into our compost bins. We let the rains come to add water, and from time to time we add a bit of soil. Then we let nature take its course, and before too long, all of that “waste” has turned into dark, crumbly humus that will enrich the soil of our garden. The leaves, the banana and orange peels, the corn husks – all this and so much more has been transformed from something seemingly useless, a by-product, into something good, useful, and enriching.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>And when my heart is feeling heavy, and I sit quietly beside my compost bins, I, too, get transformed. The grief and sadness in my heart are lifted, and I find myself once again able to be useful, to myself and to others. I am able to forge ahead into new territory. My relationship with the Holy One of Blessing has deepened.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This, in essence, is what <em>teshuvah </em>is about, turning the excess materials of our hearts and souls – those feelings of sadness, anger, jealousy, and more – into a deeper and closer relationship with G!d – re-turning to G!d – and in the process finding ourselves enriched.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It has been, I believe, through my connection with my father, who passed away almost 40 years ago, that I have learned to grieve. But grief is complex, it is not a one-time endeavor, it is a mosaic, and it returns, often when we least expect it. It shows up in new ways in response to new losses, so that frequently throughout our lives, something new and different needs to be transformed.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Thus it is for all of us, and thus it is in life. And so, our tradition provides the vehicle of the month of Elul leading up to Rosh HaShanah and all the days of the High Holidays, to give us the opportunity to let our compost be transformed, let our grief, fear, and despair be released, and let our hearts open wider, in an ever deepening relationship with the Mystery That Is.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Compost happens. May our transformation also happen.</p>

As we move forward in our chosen missions toward creating communities that feed, nurture and sustain (while protecting) all the inhabitants of the earth, I believe that it is also incumbent upon us to remain informed about the news of the day and the topics that affect underlying societal infrastructures.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Certainly, some of these infrastructures seem entrenched to the point of impermeability, none more so than the economic systems that govern world relations and, therefore, virtually every facet of our existence. For those of us concerned with environmental health and sustainability, there is possibly no greater challenge.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">During Elul, we embrace <i>teshuvah</i> and serve G-d by returning and adhering to our highest visions. It may seem daunting, but with <i>teshuvah</i> to guide us, we can redouble our efforts. And there is even more motivation and opportunity right now, as 5775 will be a <i>Shmita</i> year. </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">According to Hazon (&#8220;vision&#8221; in Hebrew), a New York-based nonprofit with six regional US offices, </span><i style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">Shmita</i><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">, which means ‘release,&#8221; is a Sabbatical year practice that allows arable</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif"> land to lie fallow while debts are forgiven, and the principles of an equitable and healthy society guide the management of agriculture and the economy.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;The <i>Shmita</i> cycle presents a cultural system rooted in local food security, economic resiliency and community empowerment,&#8221; Hazon&#8217;s <i>Shmita</i> segment states, as it advocates exploring and employing common ethics and values. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">This includes knowing the difference between &#8220;money and value.&#8221; An overabundance of goods leads to cheap prices, while scarce commodities are more valued. But according to Hazon, wealth, in<i> Shmita</i> practice, isn&#8217;t synonymous with currency: &#8220;Market capital is replaced with social capital and investments are made in long-term relationships.&#8221;</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">But how do we forge ahead in the face of a seemingly impermeable economic system that seems to be rooted in just the opposite ideology?</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Sometimes the answer is simply doubling down, and a coalition of Boston area environmental groups has done just that. An August 8 Boston Globe article by Jim O&#8217;Sullivan, &#8220;Green groups make move for more muscle,&#8221; </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">details the formation of MUSCLE (Mass. United for Science, Climate, Environment), a group effort being formed by the Environmental League of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters, Clean Water Action and the Sierra Club. According to the article, MUSCLE, whose members are tired of lip service with no results, plans to get environmentally focused nonprofits into state elections and legislative processes. This week, they will launch specific projects, including sharply messaged newspapers advertisements on climate change and youth-led efforts, and unveil 20 candidate endorsements in this fall’s races.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">As a coordinator of the Boston chapter of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, I sit on the Clean Water Action&#8217;s Alliance For a Healthy Tomorrow board. So for my own Elul teshuvah, I plan to become more involved in this effort. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;We weren’t going to be played with,&#8221; states former state representative and ELM head George Bachrach in the Globe article. Bachrach was one of three members who recently resigned in protest from the governor’s greenhouse gas reductions advisory council.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Getting back to the economy, the article ends by questioning how MUSCLE-affiliated labor unions are going to balance their participation with, for example, their members&#8217; potential roles in building the controversial Keystone pipeline.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">They might well look into Hazon guidelines for direction. By looking at the whole picture, and balancing immediate economic needs with long-term societal good, perhaps work opportunities can be found within a more sustainable, earth-nurturing energy field.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Recent revelations and lawsuits related to unprecedented surges in earthquake activity in US states where fracking is conducted (including 240 reported magnitude 3.0 or higher earthquakes in Oklahoma just this year), certainly give pause to the way we are approaching our energy needs.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;In your business and governing structures, as you make decisions that will affect others, consider the needs and voice of those who will be affected,&#8221; states Hazon. &#8220;Take into account all members of your community, especially those who are most vulnerable: the elderly, the sick, minorities with the community, and those with low-income. This is not charity. This is healthy community.&#8221;</span><br />

<p>The meteorologists predicted a possible heavy rainstorm and suggested bringing an umbrella to work.  But as I drove home from an interfaith conference, I got a call from my husband announcing: “ You’ll have to swim home – everything is flooded here.” My heart stopped beating for a minute when I heard this, realizing that all my rabbinic books and papers, many photograph albums including those from my parents’ lives in pre-Holocaust Europe, all our children’s albums and  memorabilia, my father’s award-winning black and white mounted photos, and beautiful maple wood furniture which pre-dated me – all that was DOWN THERE!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>But for now, I had to focus on getting home somehow &#8211; and indeed, the roadblocks on the main streets and highways were everywhere, with 12 feet of water at a nearby highway underpass near our home. Parking the car at a school several blocks away, I trudged through knee-deep water, only to find my husband standing waist-deep  in the middle of the lake created on our street, valiantly trying to hold back the debris so the storm sewers could drain in front of our house.  All the basements in our small suburb and several other surrounding ones had flooded with 3-5 feet of contaminated water. The irony of it all only hit me two days later when the curbsides where piled high with water-logged garbage – our community was nationally  known for being a leader in recycling ! – yet now was contributing to a huge increase of  landfill acreage with all these destroyed belongings.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Like Noah, I looked for signs of a renewal of life and dry land. This morning I found my “white dove” in the shape of the humongous white hydrangea trees and bushes and the fragrant white lily hostas blooming expansively in front of my house. Our garden did remind me that life  goes on and there is beauty and hope to be found around us, in just letting things go naturally.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As we enter the month of Elul, reflecting on what this all means and where we can improve our lives – and also entering the year of Shmita, of releasing the land to rest – I find several clear messages coming through:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>First: Live simply and examine  what you are “attached” to.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Second: We have had an Oral Tradition accompanying our Written Law – perhaps it is time for us to focus on this in a new way, relying on our memories to tell the stories, archiving what is really important on computer memory sticks, and relying on the vast internet libraries instead of creating our own paper jungles at home.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Third: Thank and show appreciation for our neighbors, friends, and families for whatever ways they support us; be on the lookout constantly for  ways to help others, quietly and in advance of a request.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Fourth: While we never can fully understand the ways of God, we  know that if we truly rely on God’s help and direction, it will come; let us be patient and trusting as our ancestors were when they could not plant for an entire year. We will survive – and even prosper!</p>

I am often looking for ways to connect to <em>teshuvah</em> even during the leisurely days of summer. <em>Teshuvah</em> for me is turning to those thoughts and actions that help me to become my better self, following those practices that nourish my growth to know peace &#8211; <em>shalom</em> &#8211; and to reach greater wholeness &#8211; <em>sh&#8217;lemut</em>. As I pursue personal growth, I resonate to the Hebrew word, <em>hitpatchut</em>, growth through an openness and receptivity to change.This summer I have focused on ways to practice with greater compassion in how I spend my time and focus my energy as I take on these goals.</p>

<p>I resonated deeply with a spiritual writing that described the personal journey of a young man who made meaningful contributions to help alleviate suffering, first locally and then he volunteered in Peru with a health organization performing basic life-saving measures for the most needy. He realized that he could not SAVE them all, that whatever he does is a small amount given the needs and intensity of the impoverishment and sickness of those in dire circumstances. And his conclusion is similar to mine—that one cannot effect major changes, but we can become more aware that individuals in pain and need require compassionate responses. He called it a &#8220;ministry of silence&#8221;—being there, being present. I was motivated anew and started to participate in healing services for homeless people in my community in order to be a witness to their lives, to their small steps to heal, to be present as they were receiving some comfort and momentary relief during the service in which I participated. One homeless woman said to me — “it mattered to me that you were here” — that comment committed me to be there regularly.</p>

<p>My involvement with a Jewish inmate (writing him for 9 years of his incarceration) meant helping him in a variety of ways in his re-entry into society after years of extreme deprivation of basic human decency, civility and concern, and consequently, he lacked the life skills that would enable him in succeeding. Being his &#8220;big sister&#8221; and listening to him and his travails and providing some financial assistance gave him an opportunity to acclimate somewhat to life on the outside (&#8220;I am physically out of prison but my mind is still shackled from the abuses&#8221;). There are few Schweitzers and Paul Farmers capable of performing their amazingly impactful service to humanity but there are endless opportunities to alleviate the hopelessness and abject suffering of individuals in our midst. We can offer a smile, and heartfelt caring that expresses joy when good things happen to them and offering advice and empathy when the challenges cannot be faced alone&#8211; communicating that &#8220;I am here now with you on your journey as you face and cope with life&#8217;s extreme difficulties.&#8221;</p>

<p>Participating in a weekly Buddhist meditation group adds to my sense of <em>teshuvah</em>, as it prepares me to practice deep listening, offering new ways to respond with compassion and kindness and caring by being mindfully present. My deep seated Jewish values and traditions inform how I address the pressing societal ills and illusive peace as I learn again and again to be present a little more each year.</p>
