				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We are excited to announce Hazon Philadelphia’s <a href="http://hazon.org/calendar/philly-bike-ride-2/">Ride the Pines</a> &#8211; Sunday, May 31st, at the JCC Camps in Medford, NJ. <a href="http://hazon.org/calendar/philly-bike-ride-2/">Ride the Pines</a> is a fully-supported bike ride and community experience for people of all cycling levels and ages, bringing together organizations like ours from across the Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey Jewish communities.</p>

<p style="color: #000000"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">This past Sunday, over 100 members of the Jewish community, from New Bedford, MA to Brattleboro, VT, gathered at Hebrew College in Newton, MA, for the first Jewish Climate Action Network conference,</span><a href="http://www.jewishclimate.org/may-2015-conference.html"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif"> &#8220;From Uncertainty to Action: What You Can Do About Climate Change.&#8221;</span></a><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif"> According to Rabbi Arthur Waskow, it was the first conference of its kind, &#8220;I would have heard about it,&#8221;  he told us, if there had been another.</span></p>
<p style="color: #000000"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">For four hours, we learned together, sang together, talked together, and connected to each other. And through all this, we were inspired, motivated, and recharged. It was an amazing afternoon. I am grateful to all those who helped make it happen, and to all those who took the time and energy to come. It was a vision fulfilled; it was a start, not and ending. It was a new beginning, of putting the Boston area Jewish community into the conversation about climate change.</span></p>
<p style="color: #000000"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'">As Jews, we are deeply rooted in Torah and in community. Today, we brought these together in the context of climate change.  The power of that connection was felt by every one present. </span></span></p>
<p style="color: #000000"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'">We will go forward from here, together. We will grow stronger. We will become more connected. We will build community. We will build enthusiasm and determination. We will weave networks of interdependence, caring, compassion, and trust. We will speak out. We will bring about change. </span></span></p>
<p style="color: #000000"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'">We will make a difference.</span></span></p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Jewish Climate Action Network (JCAN) is sponsoring its first conference, a time for community members from across New England concerned about climate change to come together. The conference will focus on a Jewish response to climate change, ideas for action, and how climate change is fundamentally a social justice issue. It will provide organized opportunities to connect with others interested in working together.</p>
<p>Summery of the conference:</p>
<ul>
<li>Panel exploring what Judaism adds to our understanding and ability to respond to climate change</li>
<li>Two rounds of workshops, each of which will provide concrete information about a specific way to respond to the threat of climate change and to connect with others</li>
<li>Opportunity to speak with community organizations and businesses involved in environmental work</li>
<li>Special workshop for teens and tweens</li>
<li>Short wrap-up program highlighting what has been accomplished and providing a send off</li>
<li>Facilitation of informal gatherings for dinner at nearby restaurants those who want to continue the conversations.</li>

<p><b>About Eden Village Camp: </b>Eden Village Camp aims to be a living model of a thriving, sustainable Jewish community, grounded in social responsibility and inspired Jewish spiritual life. By bringing the wisdom of our tradition to the environmental, social, and personal issues important to today’s young people, we practice a Judaism that is substantive and relevant. Through our Jewish environmental and service-learning curricula, joyful Shabbat observance, pluralistic Jewish expression, and inspiring, diverse staff role models, we foster our campers’ positive Jewish identity and genuine commitment to tikkun olam (healing the world). Our 3 acre educational farm and orchard are based on principles of permaculture, sustainable and organic farming. We produce annual vegetables, perennials, and tend educational gardens as well as animals.</p>
<p><b>About the Farm Educator Apprenticeship: </b>This is a paid six-month apprenticeship for young adults seeking hands-on experience. In the Spring build your knowledge based on agriculture, farm-based education and Jewish community. In the Summer, work at our 8-week intensive summer camp as Jewish Farm Educators. In the fall, take ownership and integrate your new skills by diving deeper into independent projects.  Live on-site at our beautiful camp, one hour north of New York City. By joining the farm staff at Eden Village, apprentices will hold two main responsibilities &#8211; tending our growing spaces and educating in our all of our programming through the spring, summer and fall. Apprentices will also have an opportunity to dive deeper into one of four focus areas: perennials, annuals, animals, and educational gardens. In these specialties apprentices will gain a deeper understanding of certain aspects of farming and will take on leadership and special projects to booster their learning and the learning of campers and program participants.</p>
<p><b>Details: </b>April 14th, 2015 &#8211; October 22nd 2015, Apprentices receive full room and board at Eden Village, as well as a modest stipend. Extensive experience is not necessary but experiential curiosity is required. We seek students who are grounded in their religious tradition, serious about spriiuality and the state of the planet, and open to learnig and living in an intentional community setting. This is our 6th annual program run by the Community of Living Traditions on the Stony Point Center 32 acre campus.</strong></p>

<p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.303960623124567.1073741834.161683324018965&amp;type=1">Young Urban Moshav</a> is thrilled to have the opportunity to create a demonstration garden at the <a href="http://www.jcceastbay.org/">JCC of the East Bay</a>. The garden is intended to serve the after school program’s garden curriculum and to function as a Jewish outdoor learning center for the community. The project site design will integrate best urban garden practices with Jewish cultural items such as traditional holiday foods and the fruits of Israel. The space will accommodate groups of learners and holiday activities. Young Urban Moshav’s participatory approach includes support with community engagement, from communications content and crowdsourcing to strategic connections with other Jewish green initiatives.</p>

<p>Young Urban Moshav, a new Jewish food start-up, has been accepted into the Hazon CSA network and aims to develop a residentially-based Community Supported Agriculture program. The JCC East Bay garden will be an example of garden design and implementation that Young Urban Moshav is offering for other institutions and private residences as it embarks on its goal to grow a system of interconnected urban agriculture sites across the East Bay.</p>
<p>In developing this exciting demonstration garden, Young Urban Moshav is sourcing labor and products from within the community whenever possible. As of the end of November 2014, exciting progress has been made. The garden has received its first major contribution from Katherine Gulley at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/raisedbedlamwoodworks">Raised Bedlam Woodworks</a> in Berkeley. A beautiful redwood table and bench, including end planters and a garden box, are already on site! Katherine makes custom outdoor and reclaimed furniture. She herself grew up in Berkeley attending the JCC and proudly claims that she was at her after school program at the JCC when the big earthquake of ‘89 hit.</p>

<p>The garden site, an alley between the southwest corner of the JCC building and the adjacent commercial CVS building, is being graded during the month of December so that the main area in use will be flat. Approval has been obtained for a retaining wall and ramp, to be constructed by community member Jory Gessow of Gessow Landscaping. You might recognize Jory from the annual Tikkun Leyl Shavuot events as he is an avid participant of many years!</p>
<p>JCC After School Director Cassie Brown has been overseeing the project. Green Educator Ezra Ranz has been coordinating between the JCC and Young Urban Moshav on a volunteer basis while already growing some starts with students in small boxes on location (pictured in the featured image of this article). Facilities Supervisor Chuck Weis is managing construction details regarding the building site. Front Desk Supervisor Selena Martinez has been filling an insightful and exemplary advisory role. The garden design has been developed by Young Urban Moshav volunteer Talya Ilovitz, who now is updating the drawings to include the newest developments.</p>
<p>Next major steps include construction of raised garden beds and installation of drip irrigation as well as a spiral herb garden and worm bin. Material contributions are being graciously accepted, from lumber to soil, garden equipment and planters to irrigation supplies, seeds, plants and even worms! <p>Here’s a quick bit of Sukkot Torah to start us off: “The four species of the lulav represent the four types of ecosystems in the land of Israel: desert (date palm), hills (myrtle), river corridors (willow), and <em>sh’feilah</em>, the lowlands (etrog). Each species has to be fresh, with the very tips intact – they can’t be dried out, because they hold the water of last year’s rain. Together, they make a kind of map of last year’s rainfall, and together, we use them to pray for next year’s rains.” I hope everyone enjoys the wonderful array of activities and ideas we are generating. The director, Avi Goldstein, will speak after the film.  In partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council, Webster University and the JCC.</p>

In partnership with the JCC and its Garden of Eden, a community garden that grows organic fruits and vegetables to benefit the clients of the nearby Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. <p>For Sukkot we do a 4 year rotation focusing on different aspects of the holiday.  The first year of the cycle we invite the <em>ushpizin</em> and have the 7 species at a festive meal.  The second year we look at wind with kite flying as a major activity, the third at rain and water, and the last year at stars and shade. Each exploration is done both from the Judaics side with text study and from the science/experiential side. This year we are looking at water.  For the K to 3rd graders, teachers act out the story &#8220;Why Does it Rain on Sukkot&#8221;, MS. Frizzle (science teacher) comes to teach about rain &amp; why it&#8217;s needed, then students rotate through stations that are led by 4th graders and teachers.  At the stations they investigate kosher tops for pipework sukkot, create rain sticks, have various water activities &amp; races, sing songs &amp; learn the dance &#8220;Mayyim&#8221;.  For the 5th to 8th graders, they start with an appropriate text study.  Then, the 6th through 8th graders become the instructors teaching the other grades about the aspect of water that they researched and created a project for.  6th graders look at the water cycle, which they present through posters, dioramas, etc.  They also perform a song and skit on the water cycle.  7th graders research water pollution &#8211; causes, effects, and possible solutions.  8th grade engineering students investigate flooding &#8211; causes, effects, how engineers have created solutions.  8th grade honors biology students investigate droughts, concentrating on trouble spots in the Western US, Israel &amp; the Middle East, and Africa.  They also look at causes, effects, &amp; possible solutions.  Then we have a <em>Simchat Beit HaShoava </em>– the biblical Water Libation ceremony which took place during Sukkot in Temple times, with students singing, dancing, juggling, filling pools with golden pitchers, etc.</p>

<p>Ma&#8217;yan Tikvah celebrates the High Holidays in the woods with morning services on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur as well as Kol Nidre services on Erev Yom Kippur. The services are led by Rabbi Katy Allen and are a combination of traditional and nontraditional; they are informal and participatory for those who wish to add their voices. Morning services are held outside, or if the weather requires it, under an outdoor pavilion. There is time to sing, to appreciate the natural world around us, to meditate and pray, to read and discuss the Torah portion, to hear the sound of the Sofar on Rosh HaShanah, and to remember our loved ones during Yizkor on Yom Kippur. On the first day of Rosh HaShanah, our services are followed by a pot-luck lunch and then tashlich.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We will have a very different service on the second day of Rosh HaShanah &#8211; a hike interspersed with meditations, prayers, discussion, and the blowing of the shofar, and the day will include a picnic lunch &#8211; bring your own. We will through the fields and woods and end with a picnic near the Sudbury River.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Our Kol Nidre service is mostly indoors, but if weather permits we go outside for part of the service. We will also have a short Neilah service at the end of Yom Kippur followed by a pot-luck break-fast. All are welcome, including families with children. The sites for the first day of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur are handicap accessible.</p>

As we move forward in our chosen missions toward creating communities that feed, nurture and sustain (while protecting) all the inhabitants of the earth, I believe that it is also incumbent upon us to remain informed about the news of the day and the topics that affect underlying societal infrastructures.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Certainly, some of these infrastructures seem entrenched to the point of impermeability, none more so than the economic systems that govern world relations and, therefore, virtually every facet of our existence. For those of us concerned with environmental health and sustainability, there is possibly no greater challenge.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">During Elul, we embrace <i>teshuvah</i> and serve G-d by returning and adhering to our highest visions. It may seem daunting, but with <i>teshuvah</i> to guide us, we can redouble our efforts. And there is even more motivation and opportunity right now, as 5775 will be a <i>Shmita</i> year. </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">According to Hazon (&#8220;vision&#8221; in Hebrew), a New York-based nonprofit with six regional US offices, </span><i style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">Shmita</i><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">, which means ‘release,&#8221; is a Sabbatical year practice that allows arable</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif"> land to lie fallow while debts are forgiven, and the principles of an equitable and healthy society guide the management of agriculture and the economy.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;The <i>Shmita</i> cycle presents a cultural system rooted in local food security, economic resiliency and community empowerment,&#8221; Hazon&#8217;s <i>Shmita</i> segment states, as it advocates exploring and employing common ethics and values. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">This includes knowing the difference between &#8220;money and value.&#8221; An overabundance of goods leads to cheap prices, while scarce commodities are more valued. But according to Hazon, wealth, in<i> Shmita</i> practice, isn&#8217;t synonymous with currency: &#8220;Market capital is replaced with social capital and investments are made in long-term relationships.&#8221;</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">But how do we forge ahead in the face of a seemingly impermeable economic system that seems to be rooted in just the opposite ideology?</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Sometimes the answer is simply doubling down, and a coalition of Boston area environmental groups has done just that. An August 8 Boston Globe article by Jim O&#8217;Sullivan, &#8220;Green groups make move for more muscle,&#8221; </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif">details the formation of MUSCLE (Mass. United for Science, Climate, Environment), a group effort being formed by the Environmental League of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters, Clean Water Action and the Sierra Club. According to the article, MUSCLE, whose members are tired of lip service with no results, plans to get environmentally focused nonprofits into state elections and legislative processes. This week, they will launch specific projects, including sharply messaged newspapers advertisements on climate change and youth-led efforts, and unveil 20 candidate endorsements in this fall’s races.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">As a coordinator of the Boston chapter of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, I sit on the Clean Water Action&#8217;s Alliance For a Healthy Tomorrow board. So for my own Elul teshuvah, I plan to become more involved in this effort. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;We weren’t going to be played with,&#8221; states former state representative and ELM head George Bachrach in the Globe article. Bachrach was one of three members who recently resigned in protest from the governor’s greenhouse gas reductions advisory council.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Getting back to the economy, the article ends by questioning how MUSCLE-affiliated labor unions are going to balance their participation with, for example, their members&#8217; potential roles in building the controversial Keystone pipeline.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif"> </span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">They might well look into Hazon guidelines for direction. By looking at the whole picture, and balancing immediate economic needs with long-term societal good, perhaps work opportunities can be found within a more sustainable, earth-nurturing energy field.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">Recent revelations and lawsuits related to unprecedented surges in earthquake activity in US states where fracking is conducted (including 240 reported magnitude 3.0 or higher earthquakes in Oklahoma just this year), certainly give pause to the way we are approaching our energy needs.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr"></div>
<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif">&#8220;In your business and governing structures, as you make decisions that will affect others, consider the needs and voice of those who will be affected,&#8221; states Hazon. &#8220;Take into account all members of your community, especially those who are most vulnerable: the elderly, the sick, minorities with the community, and those with low-income. This is not charity. This is healthy community.&#8221;</span><br />

<p>The world seems a little topsy turvy these days. A plane missing. 223 girls kidnapped in Nigeria. 3 teen agers kidnapped and murdered in Israel. A plane shot out of the sky. Israel in Gaza. Rockets in Israel. Too many children killed in the streets of Chicago. Too many deaths. When does it stop?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In the Fox River Valley, Illinois, after a punishing winter of epic proportions, it is nice to be outside. Six congregations, part of the nascent Prairie Jewish Coalition, sponsored the Topsy Turvy bus.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What is a topsy turvy bus? It is a school bus, bright yellow, with half of another school bus on top, welded together and running entirely on used food oil. It is a project of Hazon to draw attention to climate change.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Draw attention it does. You have never seen anything like it. Part school bus, part RV, part camper, five  people (and two support staff) are driving this bus from Colorado to Isabella Friedman Retreat Center in Connecticut.  Inside the bus there are sleeping quarters, a kitchen, storage space and even a library!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ben Cohen of Ben &amp; Jerry’s commissioned the bus. The first tour raised awareness of wasteful spending at the Pentagon. Maybe this Topsy Turvy bus can bring peace! The second tour promoted the White House Organic Farm project. So it makes sense that on a sunny, Sunday afternoon, my congregation, Kneseth Israel, and Pushing the Envelope Farm have come together to host this event.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The residents, drivers, educators engaged all ages who turned out. There were yummy blueberry smoothies made by a bicycle blender. Even better vegan chocolate chip cookies made with three different models of solar cookers. This led to an interesting debate about whether you could use a solar cooker to cook a chicken for Shabbat.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The solar cooking and the bicycle smoothies remind me that I want to install a solar <em>ner tamid</em>, eternal light at our synagogue.  The brainchild of Rabbi Everett Gendler, one of the first Jewish environmentalists, Temple Emanuel of the Merrimack Valley installed the first one in 1978. It raises awareness about the power of the sun and the need to protect our environment, to be caretakers with G-d, in this glorious creation..</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>People could tour Pushing the Envelope Farm, owned by Rabbi Fred Margulies and his wife Trisha who built the farm from spare acreage on their Continental Envelope Company land in Geneva, IL. They are using it primarily as a teaching farm, with programs for schools, synagogues, churches and scout troops. With 14 acres, there is an organic CSA, various crops and farm animals.  A portion of everything they grow goes to the nearby Northern Illinois Food Bank.</p>
<p>The kids who came loved playing with the chickens and the goats. They loved making their own smoothies and solar cooked cookies. I loved seeing the signs in English, Hebrew, Spanish. And while the bees are critically important, to sustainability and our celebrations of Rosh Hashanah, I gave them a wide berth as I hiked by.</p>
<p>But maybe what I loved most is how this Topsy Turvey bus got all of us—from six congregations and from two years old to eighty, outside on a beautiful, summer day. It would seem that the world is not so Topsy Turvey. Maybe there can even be peace.</p>

<p>A memory: Our newborn is up again. I turn to the clock. It’s 4:25 am. Less than three hours since she last awoke. My husband and I are exhausted, and we lie quietly for a few moments, willing our daughter back to sleep. But her cries are persistent. Who knows if she’s hungry, cold, or simply distressed and looking for comfort?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Regardless, we’ve reached our “give-her-a-moment” limit; there’s only so long one can ignore an infant baby’s cries. My husband grabs for his glasses, makes his way to the</p>
<p>nursery, and returns with our loosely swaddled howling bundle. He lays her beside me and her whimpers subside. She begins to nurse. We are calmed. At that moment, there is no more peaceful sound than the blissful rhythm of our baby sucking.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The calf is born. Cold and disoriented, its mother nestles close to provide warmth; she guides her baby’s mouth toward her udders. The calf suckles and then falls asleep by its mother.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The mother and child remain this way, comforted, nurtured by each other’s presence. The calf awakes and drinks more of the colostrum, or early milk, from its mother. This liquid gold is rich in antibodies, essential for the health and growth of the baby calf, but not fit for human consumption. Within 24 hours, the calf has done its job, drunk all the colostrum. The cow’s milk fills her udders. This milk, unlike the colostrum, is valuable and will be collected for humans.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It is time; a farmhand waits until mother and baby are sleeping side-by-side, lifts the baby to its feet and nudges it away. The unnecessary cost has been removed; this calf, like all the others on this farm, is separated permanently from her mother. This calf will never again drink its mother’s milk.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Neighbors awake. They hear strange noises: indescribably, inhuman, and unrecognizable. The sounds are clearly coming from creatures in distress. Between midnight and 7:00 am, at least four neighbors alert the police. Officers are dispatched to the dairy farm to investigate the source of the eerie, troubling sound. Assurances are given that all is well.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This is just business as usual. The calf must not drink the profits. The cow and calf’s time together has ended. But maternal-child bonds are not easily broken. The separation causes extreme anxiety and suffering. The bellows emanate from the mother cow lamenting the separation from her baby. Gates will be check to ensure she is securely penned. It is not uncommon for a mother cow to trek for miles in search of her calf. Sadly, this pregnancy, birth, separation, commercial milk production cycle which is forced upon the cows continues. Lactation will not occur otherwise.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Dairy products are suffused with the suffering of a mother and a child separated and unable to soothe one another. I hear their cries and cannot ignore them.</p>

	<span style="font-size:18px;">There are two crises in the world today that call especially for Jewish responses:</p>
<p>	One because it involves the future of a state that calls itself &ldquo;Jewish,&rdquo; and of its supporters in America  &#8212; their spiritual, intellectual, ethical, and physical futures &ndash; at a moment when the relationship between Jews and our Abrahamic cousins of Palestine is filled with violence that threatens to kill more people, breed more hatred, and poison the bloodstream of Judaism and Jewish culture;</p>
<p>	The other because it calls on Judaism as &ndash;- probably uniquely &#8212; a world religion that still can draw on having once been an indigenous people of shepherds and farmers with a Torah, offerings, festivals, and many other practices centered on the sacred relationship with the Earth.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Can these roots regrow new flowering at a moment when all the wisdom of all human cultures is needed to cope with a planetary crisis that originates in human mistreatment of the Earth?</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">We are living in the midst of the planetary climate crisis, the scorching of our Mother Earth, the choking of what was the balanced Breath of Life, our atmosphere, Whose sacred Name is <span style="color:#00f;"><strong><em>YyyyHhhhWwwwHhhh. </em></strong></span></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="color:#008000;"><span style="font-size: 18px;"><strong><em>If we pronounce those letters, that &ldquo;Name,&rdquo; without vowels, we can hear the &ldquo;still small Voice&rdquo; Elijah heard, the sound not of silence but of breathing; the sound that susses between trees and human beings as we breathe in what the trees breathe out and the trees breathe in what we breathe out; the balance of CO2 and Oxygen that through our atmosphere breathes life throughout our planet. </em></strong></span></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="color:#008000;"><span style="font-size: 18px;"><strong><em>We call the radical disturbance in that balanced breathing the &ldquo;climate crisis&rdquo;; it is a crisis in the Name of God.  </em></strong></span></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><em><strong>Our ability to pay attention to the climate crisis seems always to be drowned out by the <span style="color:#f00;">blood</span> of war or the <span style="background-color:#ffffe0;"><span style="color: rgb(0, 255, 255);">tears </span></span>of the poor; but the </strong></em><em><strong>scorching of our planet</strong></em><em><strong> is already causing far more deaths and is threatening the lives and foods and homes of millions more.</strong></em></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">How can we draw on the ancient wisdom of Biblical Israel as an indigenous people in sacred relationship with the Earth? How can we use this storehouse of wisdom toward helping heal all Humanity and Mother Earth today, from a crucial planetary crisis threatening the very life and health of all of us?</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;"> There are three weeks from 17 Tammuz (when the Babylonian Army broke through the walls of Jerusalem) to Tisha B&rsquo;Av (when they destroyed the Temple). (In the Western calendar in 2014, these three weeks run from July 15 to August 4-5.)</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Traditionally, these three weeks were about danger to the Temple and then its destruction.  </span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">It was through the Temple that ancient Israel made contact with God.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">The contact came not by words of prayer or words of Torah study, but by offering on the Altar a portion of the foods that <span style="color:#00f;"><em><strong>YyyyHhhhWwwwHhhh, </strong></em></span>the Interbreathing Spirit of all life, had brought forth from <em>adamah</em>, the Earth.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">So <strong><em>adam</em>,</strong> the human community, praised<span style="color:#00f;"><em><strong>YHWH</strong></em></span> and celebrated the  sharing of life through the food that came from <strong><em>adamah</em>.</strong></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">According to the records of the Prophet Jeremiah (chapter 34), as the Babylonian Army approached the city, he had called on the Israelites to free all their slaves and make real the Jubilee.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">In that Homebringing, the Earth was released from human exploitation and the poor were released from exploitation by the rich &#8212; for each family received an equal share of land. The rich would release themselves from greedy domination, the poor would release themselves from fear and rage.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">So the people heeded Jeremiah and freed their slaves. The Babylonians pulled back. Perhaps they were impressed by this demonstration of the people&#39;s unity and commitment.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">But &#8212;  seeing the besieging army withdraw, the slaveholders changed their minds and took back their slaves.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Then Jeremiah prophesied their doom: &quot;Says <span style="color:#00f;"><em><strong>YHWH</strong></em>,</span> Breath of Life: &#39;You would not hear My Voice and proclaim a release, each to his kinsman and countryman. Here! I proclaim your release &mdash; declares <span style="color:#00f;"><em><strong>YHWH </strong></em></span>&mdash; to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine.&quot; </span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Paraphrasing: <strong><em>If you will not let the Land rest, you will be exiled and it will rest in your absence. If you will not free your slaves, you will all become slaves. If you will not hear and listen to the still small Voice of the Breathing that connects all life, your own breath will be taken from you.</em></strong></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">And he was right. The Imperial Army realized that the people were no longer united, but divided by the greed of the rich and the rage of the poor. The Army returned, conquered the city, and destroyed the Temple.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Much later, the Rabbis named the ancient sin as idolatry. And indeed, as the slave-holders made idols of their own domineering power, they rejected the Interbreathing Spirit.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">They themselves had already destroyed their real connection with God, and the Destruction was simply an affirmation of their rejection.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">The three weeks between 17th of Tammuz and the 9th day of the Jewish &ldquo;moonth&rdquo; of Av were weeks of uncertainty &#8212; of choice.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Choice for the Israelites and for the Babylonians. Which side were they on &#8212; their own power to lord it over other people and Mother Earth herself, or the Breath of Life that intertwines us all?</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Shall we choose the God Who calls for freedom, for release, for a turning-away from our own arrogance?</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">When the walls between us have fallen, can both sides reach out to release themselves and each other from being enemies? Or shall we resort to subjugating others, and pay the price of being ourselves subjugated? </span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">In 586 BCE, both peoples failed. And for the Jews, the day of the final Destruction became a day of deep mourning, a 25-hour Fast from food and water, luxurious clothes and perfumes, even sex. </span></p>
<p>
	<span style="color:#008000;"><span style="font-size: 18px;"><strong><em>Jewish tradition also saw this day of despair, Tisha B&#39;Av, as the day when the Messiah was born &#8212; and hidden away for a time of transformation. From hitting rock bottom comes the courage and commitment to arise.  In short, a day of grief and hope and action.</em></strong></span></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="color:#008000;"><span style="font-size: 18px;"><em><strong>In our generation, we can turn from grief for the destruction of one community&#39;s ancient sacred place to grief, hope, and above all action focused on the future of endangered Earth. For Earth is our Temple, the sacred Temple of all human cultures and all living beings.</strong></em></span></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Now we know that we human beings through our own corporate &quot;armies&quot; of Big Carbon have broken down the walls that protected thousands of species and the climate that gave life to us all.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">What shall we do now that these walls are shattered? </span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">We can continue with business as usual, despoiling our Mother Earth still more.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Or we can begin to change direction:</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">At the level of action to change public policy on climate, we can use this period to mobilize support for the People&#39;s Climate March in New York City on September 21, just a few days before the Rosh Hashanah that begins a Sabbatical or Shmita Year of restfulness for the Earth.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">At the level of prayer and spiritual practice, we can draw on several ways of addressing Tisha B&rsquo;Av as a day of mourning, hope, and action for the Earth at https://theshalomcenter.org/treasury/116.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="color:#00f;"><span style="font-size: 18px;">In these ways we can pause to choose the path of conscious interbreathing, repairing our interwoven threads of deep connection, renewing our covenant with <strong><em>YyyyHhhhWwwwHhhh.</em></strong></span></span></p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>	<span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Nature-Based Workshops for Educators in Jewish Preschools, Day Schools and Synagogues</em></span></p>

	<span style="font-size:12px;">Reisterstown, MD &ndash; May 5, 2014 &#8212; <a href="http://www.pearlstonecenter.org">Pearlstone Center</a> is holding its 4<sup>th</sup> annual Nevatim-Sprouts Conference, Sunday, July 13<sup>th</sup> through Wednesday July 16<sup>th</sup>. This professional development conference brings together early childhood, day school, and religious school educators from around the country for training in Jewish garden and environmental education.  Participants learn the basics of educational garden design, share lesson plans and Jewish, environmental curricula, tour the state&rsquo;s premier outdoor classrooms, harvest and prepare farm to table meals, and walk away with the tools, resources, and professional network needed to develop Jewish, environmental programming at their schools.</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px;">This year, in response to past participant feedback, an additional day was added to the conference to provide more opportunities for interactive lesson-plan modeling and group brainstorm. Hands-on sessions explore how to integrate an educational garden into your institution and bring the outside into the classroom to teach about the Jewish calendar, social justice, stewardship and responsibility, among other Jewish values.  Pearlstone&rsquo;s skilled staff utilize the center&rsquo;s 4-acre organic farm, small animal pasture and trails throughout the conference. Continuing education credits (CEUs) from the Maryland Department of Education are available to participants.</span></p>

	<span style="font-size:18px;">There it sits on the Seder plate: <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>charoset</strong></em></span>, a delicious paste of chopped nuts, chopped fruits, spices, and wine.</p>
<p>	So the question would seem obvious: &quot;Why is there <strong><span style="color:#cc0099;"><em>charoset</em></span></strong> on the Seder plate?&quot;</p>
<p>	That&#39;s the most secret Question at the Seder &ndash; so secret nobody even asks it. And it&rsquo;s got the most secret answer: none.</p>
<p>	The Haggadah explains about matzah, the bread so dry it blocks your insides for a week.</p>
<p>	The Haggadah explains about the horse-radish so bitter it blows the lid off your lungs and makes breathing so painful you wish you could just stop.</p>
<p>	The Haggadah even explains about that scrawny chicken neck, or maybe the roasted beet,  masquerading as a whole roast lamb.</p>
<p>	But it never explains <span style="color:#cc3366;"><em><strong>charoset.</strong></em></span></p>
<p>	Yes, there&#39;s an oral tradition. (Fitting for something that tastes so delicious!) You&#39;ve probably heard somebody at a Passover Seder claim that <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>charoset </strong></em></span>is the mortar the ancient Israelite slaves had to paste between the bricks and stones of those giant warehouses they were building for Pharaoh.</p>
<p>	But that&#39;s a cover story. Really dumb. You think that mortar was so sweet, so spicy, so delicious that every ancient Israelite just had to slaver some mortar on his tongue?</p>
<p>	You think it wasn&#39;t leeks and onions they wailed for after they crossed the Sea of Blood, but the mortar they were pasting on their masters&#39; mansions? You think they were whining, &quot;Give me mortar or give me death?&quot;</p>
<p>	Forbid it, Almighty God!</p>
<p>	OK, maybe it&rsquo;s a midrash? Those bitter-hearted rabbis, always fresh from some pogrom or exile, claiming that to the Israelites, slavery was sweet? So sweet that it reminds us that slavery may taste sweet, and this is itself a deeper kind of slavery?</p>
<p>	No. The oral tradition transmitted by <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>charoset</strong></em></span> is not by word of mouth but taste of mouth. A kiss of mouth. A full-bodied, full-tongued, &quot;kisses sweeter than wine&quot; taste of mouth.</p>
<p>	<span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>Charoset</strong></em></span> is an embodiment of by far the earthiest, sexiest, kissyest, bodyest book of the Hebrew Bible &#8212;- the Song of Songs. <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>Charoset</strong></em></span> is literally a full-bodied taste of the Song. The Song is the recipe for charoset.</p>
<p>	You think they were going to tell you that when you were six years old, just learning how to stumble through &quot;Mah nishtanah,&quot; the Four Questions? Or maybe when you were fourteen, just beginning to eye that good-looking cousin sitting right across the table?</p>
<p>	Or maybe when you were 34 and they were all nagging you to settle down already, get married &ndash;&#8211; that&#39;s when you thought they might finally tell the truth about charoset?</p>
<p>	Face it: They were never going to tell you.</p>
<p>	Maybe, without ever asking or answering about <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>charoset</strong></em></span>, they might mention something that seemed entirely different: that the olden rabbis thought the Song of Songs should be recited during the festival of Passover, but quickly they&#39;d explain that what seems so erotic in the Song was really about God&#39;s loving effort to free the Israelites from Pharaoh.</p>
<p>	And &ndash; especially important in our generation:</p>
<p>	The Song is by far the likeliest candidate of all Biblical books to have been written, or collated, or edited, by a woman. A woman&rsquo;s experience is central to it.</p>
<p>	AND &ndash; it is filled with love not only between human beings but between human beings and the Earth. The luscious tastes of fruit, nuts, spices, wine &ndash; are the delicious savors and flavors of the Earth.</p>
<p>	Time to tell the passionate truth: The Song of Songs is the recipe for <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>charoset</strong></em></span>, and <span style="color:#800000;"><strong><em>charoset</em></strong></span> is the delicious embodiment of the Song.</p>
<p>	<em><strong><span style="color:#800000;">Verses from the Song:</p>
<p>	&quot;Feed me with apples and with raisin-cakes;</p>
<p>	&quot;Your kisses are sweeter than wine;</p>
<p>	&quot;The scent of your breath is like apricots;</p>
<p>	&quot;Your cheeks are a bed of spices;</p>
<p>	&quot;The fig tree has ripened;</p>
<p>	&quot;Then I went down to the walnut grove.&quot;<br />
	</span></strong></em><br />
	There are several kinds of freedom that we celebrate on Pesach:</p>
<p>	The freedom of people who rise up against Pharaoh, the tyrant.</p>
<p>	The freedom of Earth, the flowers that rise up against winter.</p>
<p>	The freedom of birth, of the lambs who trip and stagger in their skipping-over, passing-over dance called &ldquo;<em>pesach</em>.&rdquo;</p>
<p>	The freedom of sex, that rises up against the prunish and the prudish.</p>
<p>	The text of the Song subtly, almost secretly, bears the recipe for <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>charoset</strong></em></span>, and we might well see the absence of any specific written explanation of <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>charoset</strong></em></span> as itself a subtle, secret pointer toward the &quot;other&quot; liberation of Pesach &ndash;- the erotic, Earth-loving freedom celebrated in the Song of Songs, which we are taught to read on Passover.</p>
<p>	The Song of Songs is sacred not only to Jews, but also to Christians and to Muslims, and especially to the mystics in all three traditions. Its earth-and-human-loving erotic energy has swept away poets and rabbis, lovers and priests, dervishes and gardeners.</p>
<p>	Yet this sacred power &#8212; &quot;Love is strong as death,&quot; sings the Song &#8212; has frightened many generations into limiting its power. Redefining its flow as a highly structured allegory, or hiding it from the young, or forbidding it from being sung in public places.</p>
<p>	Even so, long tradition holds that on the Shabbat in the middle of Passover, Jews chant the Song of Songs.</p>
<p>	Why is this time of year set aside for this extraordinary love poem? At one level, because it celebrates the springtime rebirth of life.</p>
<p>	And the parallel goes far deeper. For the Song celebrates a new way of living in the world.</p>
<p>	The way of love between the earth and her human earthlings, beyond the future of conflict between them that accompanies the end of Eden.</p>
<p>	The way of love between women and men, with women celebrated as leaders and initiators, beyond the future of subjugation that accompanies the end of Eden.</p>
<p>	The way of bodies and sexuality celebrated, beyond the future of shame and guilt that accompanies the end of Eden.</p>
<p>	The way of God so fully present in the whole of life that God needs no specific naming (for in the Song, God&#39;s name is never mentioned).</p>
<p>	The way of adulthood, where there is no Parent and there are no children. No one is giving orders, and no one obeys them. Rather there are grownups, lovers &#8212; unlike the domination and submission that accompany the end of Eden.</p>
<p>	In short, Eden for grown-ups. For a grown-up human race.</p>
<p>	Whereas the original Garden was childhood, bliss that was unconscious, unaware, the Garden of the Song is maturity. Death is known, conflict is recognized (as when the heroine&#39;s brothers beat her up), yet joy sustains all.</p>
<p>	So the &quot;recipe&quot; points us toward apples, quinces, raisins, apricots, figs, nuts, wine. Within the framework of the free fruitfulness of the earth, the &quot;recipe&quot; is free-form: no measures, no teaspoons, no amounts. Not even a requirement for apples rather than apricots, cinnamon rather than cloves, figs rather than dates. So there is an enormous breadth for the tastes that appeal to Jews from Spain, Poland, Iraq, India, America.</p>
<p>	Nevertheless, I will offer a recipe.</p>
<p>	Take a pound of raw shelled almonds, two pounds of organic raisins, and a bottle of red wine. On the side have organic apricots, chopped apples, figs, and dates (no pits), and small bottles of powdered cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.</p>
<p>	Assemble either an electric blender, or your great-grandmom&#39;s cast-iron hand-wound gefulte-fish chopper brought from the Old Country. If it&#39;s the blender, put it on &quot;chop&quot; rather than &quot;paste&quot; frequency.</p>
<p>	Start feeding the almonds and raisins into the blender or mixer, in judicious mixture. (How do you know &quot;judicious&quot;? Whatever doesn&rsquo;t get the whole thing stuck so it won&#39;t keep grinding.) Whenever you feel like it, pour in some wine to lubricate the action. Stop the action every once in a while to poke around and stir up the ingredients.</p>
<p>	Freely choose when to add apricots, apples, figs, and/or dates. Taste every ten minutes or so. If you start feeling giddy, good! &#8212; that&#39;s the idea.</p>
<p>	Add in the spices. Clove is powerful, sweet and subtly sharp at the same time; a lot will get you just on the edge of High.</p>
<p>	Keep stirring, keep chopping, keep dribbling wine &#8212; not till the <span style="color:#800000;"><em><strong>charoset</strong></em></span> turns to paste but till there are still nubs of nuts, grains of raisin, suddenly a dollop of apricot spurting on your tongue.</p>
<p>	You say this doesn&#39;t seem like a recipe, too free? Ahhh &#8212; as the Song itself says again and again, &quot;Do not stir up love until it pleases. Do not rouse the lovers till they&#39;re willing.&quot;</p>
<p>	Serve at the Pesach Seder, and also on the night when you first make love to a delicious partner. And on every wedding anniversary. And on the day when you and your friends decide to Move Our Money/Protect Our Planet &ndash; because the planet is not abstract and theoretical, but what we celebrate when we take <span style="background-color:#ee82ee;"><span style="color: rgb(128, 0, 0);"><em><strong>charoset</strong></em></span></span> on our tongues.</p>

And I will give grass in your fields for your cattle, and you shall eat and be satisfied. 	&ldquo;Monsanto also threatens the sustainability of agriculture because its products require the use of larger quantities of water and fossil fuels in farming. While genetically engineered crops are supposed to be more drought resistant, the opposite turns out to be true. <br />

	</span><span style="font-size:14pt">&ldquo;Jewish wisdom,  from the earliest verses of Torah to the teachings of Rav Kook in the 20th century, yearn toward a vegetarian diet. Now we must do more than yearning. Current livestock agriculture contributes greatly to all four major global warming gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides, and chlorofluorocarbons. Every year millions of acres of tropical forest are burned, primarily to raise livestock, releasing millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The highly mechanized agricultural sector uses a significant amount of fossil fuel energy, and this also contributes to carbon dioxide emissions. Cattle emit methane as part of their digestive and excretory processes.<br />
	A 2009 cover article in <i>World Watch</i> magazine, &lsquo;Livestock and Climate Change,&rsquo; by two environmentalists associated with the World Bank argued that the livestock sector is responsible for at least 51 percent of all human-induced greenhouse gases. This is largely due to the massive destruction of tropical rain forests to produce pasture land and land to grow feed crops for animals and the emission of methane  from farmed animals. During the 20-year periods that methane remains in the atmosphere it is per molecule 72 times more potent in causing warming than CO2.<br />
	&ldquo;According to a 2006 UN Food and Agriculture Organization report &lsquo;Livestock&rsquo;s Long Shadow,&rsquo; animal-based agriculture emits more greenhouse gases (in carbon dioxide equivalents) than all the cars, planes, ships and other means of transportation combined (18 percent versus 13.5 percent).</p>

	</span><span style="font-size:14pt"> &ldquo;Jewish mysticism imagines the cosmos to be a manifestation of the divine which unfolds through ten powers or qualities, which are called the <i>sefirot</i>. The sefirot &hellip;are seen as both emanated and eternal, created and pre-existent; as such, the <i>sefirot</i> become the pattern both for God and creation. The world of the <i>sefirot</i> is typically pictured in terms of two forms: a cosmic tree and a primordial human body.</p>
<p>	&ldquo;The central sefirot  are described both as the trunk of a body and the trunk of a tree. It is this tree which we celebrate on Tu B&rsquo;Shvat, the &ldquo;New Year for The Tree,&rdquo; as Kabbalists understood the mishnaic phrase &ldquo;<i>rosh ha-shanah la-ilan</i>&rdquo;. The way in which these forms overlap has three obvious implications: 1) the human is patterned in the image of both creation and God simultaneously, 2) creation in its totality is therefore also &ldquo;in God&rsquo;s image,&rdquo; and 3) the tree itself is also created in the image of God.</p>
<p>	&ldquo;The unity of human and tree which is the basis of the Kabbalistic Tu B&rsquo;Shvat seder is not just a metaphor for how important trees are to us, but a meditation on the idea that both trees and human creatures are patterned after the life of the cosmos. About half of the millions of gallons of water used to frack the wells remains underground, untreated. Pipes and casings are supposed to contain it, but over time cement shrinks and metal corrodes. The other half of the water is stored in tanks or open pits that are vulnerable to leaks. This water is supposed to be treated, but few facilities are prepared to handle it&hellip;</p>
<p>	 &ldquo;So to safeguard the water we drink, we have to find another source of energy.  Drilling has already begun in Pennsylvania and other states.  In New York a grassroots movement has resulted in a temporary ban on fracking that has slowed down the gas companies. <p>	As summer turns to fall, plants are preparing seed for the next cycle of nature. We too must nourish the world for the coming generation. Just as the natural world goes through changes to achieve its full potential, we also need to change: we need to get rid of anger, envy and greed so that we can be free to grow. When we do this, we will become very strong, healthy trees, with solid roots in the ground and our arms open to the love that is all around us. Many of our trees become red. <p>I&#8217;m not blogging much lately due to certain matters going on in my life. Sorry, I know this is supposed to be a weekly post but life happens&#8230;.</p>
<p>Anyway, here&#8217;s this week&#8217;s tip. This applies if you live in a place where there&#8217;s a central dumpster where people dump their garbage: When you take out the garbage, keep your eyes open for things that might not really be garbage but perhaps someone was just trying to get rid of the item without it occurring to them that maybe someone else could use it. If you find something useful, go ahead and take it home! For example, yesterday I &#8220;rescued&#8221; a chair that turned out to be still in decent condition, and comfortable, too. I recommend cleaning such finds before using them, as you don&#8217;t know where they&#8217;ve been&#8230;.If you find something that could be useful for someone but not you, you can &#8220;rescue&#8221; it anyway and donate it to Goodwill or another organization of your preference that takes such things. (Another idea is to try putting it up for sale, say on Craigslist or eBay, but keep in mind that you can&#8217;t always be confident that you can accurately describe the condition of the item and again, you have no idea where it&#8217;s been&#8230;.) That way you can help the environment while simultaneously helping an organization and also someone who could use the item in question! <img src="https://beta.jewcology.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" class="wp-smiley" /> </p>
<p>If you see that there&#8217;s an ongoing problem of people leaving perfectly good items, you might want to call the problem to the attention of your building/apartment complex manager (or whoever else is in charge). I called mine today and left a message with the following ideas: 1. They could write a notice so people are aware that there&#8217;s a Goodwill nearby. (That applies to my situation; you could customize this for your own situation.) Have them point out that other people might be able to make use of the item, even if the current owner is done with it. 2. They could designate a place, apart from the dumpster(s), where people could leave stuff they don&#8217;t want that&#8217;s still good, and people could come and take what they want. I didn&#8217;t get a response yet but at least I tried.</p>

	<span style="font-size:16px;">Judaism is especially relevant because, unlike most world religions, we preserve the teachings of an indigenous people in the biblical tradition &ndash;- the spiritual wisdom of shepherds and farmers.  And yet as a world people, we can now apply the earthiness of our origins to the Whole Earth.</span></p>

	<span style="font-size:16px;">That does not mean simply repeating the ancient practices. It does what Kabbalah yearns toward: reintegrating the two Trees of Eden &#8212; the Tree of Flowing Life and the Tree of Distinction-making &#8212;  into One.</span></p>

	<span style="font-size:16px;">3.    <span style="color:#b22222;"> <strong>Relationally</strong></span>, our recognition  of the varied ethical, religious, and spiritual life-paths as necessary and valuable unfoldings of the varied &ldquo;organs&rdquo; of human civilization and planetary life &ndash; as different from each other and as equally necessary to each other as the brain, liver, heart, and lungs in a single body. To heal our planet in the present crisis, we will need to draw on the wisdom and commitment of every human culture. So we need to move beyond interfaith dialogue into the pursuit of interrelational work among the different communities.</span></p>

	<span style="font-size:16px;">4.      <span style="color:#b22222;">Vigorous <strong>action</strong> </span>to confront the modern Carbon Pharaohs that are bringing plagues of drought, flood, war, and famine on the Earth and all Humanity &ndash; action that might include lobbying, voting, rallies, vigils, nonviolent civil disobedience, organizing counter-institutions like coops, organic farms, etc., and economic action to Move Our Money/Protect Our Planet (MOM/POP) &ndash; moving our money from corporate investments and banks that endanger Mother Earth to companies, banks, coops, etc. that protect and heal her.</span></p>

	Since human action has endangered the web of life on earth, human action can heal it.</p>
<p>
	And the religious and spiritual communities of our planet have the wisdoms and the tools to do the healing.</p>
<p>
	<span style="color:#008000;"><strong>Judaism is especially relevant because, unlike most world religions, we preserve the teachings of an indigenous people in the biblical tradition &ndash;- the spiritual wisdom of shepherds and farmers.  And yet as a world people, we can now apply the earthiness of our origins to the Whole Earth.</strong></span></p>
<p>
	That does not mean simply repeating the ancient practices. For instance, the ancient code of kosher food does not take into account that we now &ldquo;eat&rdquo; coal and oil and crucial minerals like lithium. Is there an &ldquo;eco-kosher&rdquo; way of eating them, as well as caring for vegetables and fruit and kosher animals in ways traditional kashrut did not? Can we shape our ceremonial ways of celebrating Sukkot and Pesach and Tu B&rsquo;Shvat and life-cycle ceremonies so that they embody social action to heal our wounded Earth  as an aspect of spiritual deepening?</p>

	For the past 4 years, a gathering of brightly spirited, intergenerational and diverse teachers, students, children and individuals have profoundly experienced and impacted the environmental Jewish movement at our annual Shabbaton.  Nestled away in a beautiful green landscape, we participate in deep learning, meaningful prayer and connection, and transformational experiences.</p>

	Join us this year as we dive into themes devoted to the Jewish calendar.</p>

	How does the Jewish calendar provide a spiritual, land-based rhythm for Jewish living? </p>

	How do we apply Jewish agricultural values on land, the classroom, and throughout society? </p>

	 Learn from a talented group of educators, featuring Pardes, Hazon, and Mechon Hadar staff.  Classes will explore the 7 year cycle of Shmittah, the connection between rain and fast days, the agricultural roots of our holidays, and more.  Eat delicious Kosher food, including Grow &amp; Behold Pastured Meats, and walk away having created beautiful connections to your inner self, other individuals and the holy earth around you.  Past participants have shared, &ldquo;If you wanted to see swords being turned into plowshares, the place to be is at the Beit Midrash. <p>Although the flood and the life of Noah occurred thousands of years ago, the story of Noah offers important lessons about how our actions affect the world. The Torah teaches that ten generations after Creation, all life on the planet had &#8220;corrupted its way on the earth&#8221;(Genesis 6:12). G-d gave humans 120 years to improve their ways, using Noah and his ark as messengers. Yet the people ignored the message and missed the boat. Noah built the ark, brought the animals into it, and lived on it with his family for the duration of the flood. After Noah left the ark, G-d made a covenant with Noah, designating the rainbow as the sign of the Creator&#8217;s commitment not to destroy the world.</p>

It is also traditionally a time for soul searching, for clearing out old &ldquo;stuff&rdquo; and ways of doing things.  During this season of renewal, we at Teva Ivri are finding ways to check not only our homes but also our &ldquo;houses of prayer.&rdquo;</span></p>

	<span style="font-size:14px;">Along with the <a href="http://www.israel-yafa.org.il/">Council for a Beautiful Israel</a>and <a href="http://www.greennow.org.il/">Green Now</a>, Teva Ivri has just announced the first <strong>&ldquo;Greenest Synagogue Contest&rdquo;</strong> ever held in Israel.  By launching the contest during the pre-Passover season, we encourage Jews throughout Israel to examine our houses of prayer &ndash; synagogues &ndash; to see if they are conducting themselves with a sense of communal responsibility and a sense of protecting G-d&rsquo;s world.</span></p>

	<span style="font-size:14px;"><br />
	</span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:14px;">Although greening synagogues has become a popular way for Jewish communities in the United States and Europe to engage in environmental action, this is the first campaign of its kind in Israel.  The contest aims to raise Israelis&rsquo; awareness about the links between Judaism and the environment and to encourage concrete change in Jewish institutions.  Teva Ivri will provide information and guidance to synagogues starting out on the path to sustainability.  Over the course of several months, participating synagogues will be evaluated based on their actualization of environmental and social justice values.  </span></p>

In galvanizing communities to green their synagogues, we are emphasizing that the institution that has guided the Jewish people for over 2000 years can be relevant to our efforts toward environmental protection and better quality of life.&rdquo;</span></em></span></p>

	<span style="font-size:14px;">The contest has generated interest from a number of prominent religious leaders and educators in Israel.  HaRav Yisrael Lau, Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv and former Chief Rabbi of Israel, will preside over the evaluation committee.  The co-chair of the committee will be Professor Zechariah Madar, the head scientist of the Ministry of Education.  The Association of Religious Councils in Israel will call upon religious councils throughout the country to actively recruit synagogues for the competition.</span></p>

	As we move towards Passover, we journey through the narrow places (mitzrayim) of Winter into the open, lush landscape of Spring. We can feel the season working its magic: the more time we spend outside, the more Spring does to us what it does to the cherry blossom trees! As we read in the Hagaddah (the Passover seder story), we are asked to celebrate our freedom and to remember: &quot;Today, we are slaves. Next year, we will be free.&quot; The Exodus is a story of our past, but it is relevant today &#8211; for one, it&#39;s time to explore how we can more fully experience liberation and the world that we envision. Connecting with our land and community helps bring us not just the idea of liberation, but the experience of it. We encourage all to immerse in nature in some way soon&#8230; it&#39;s one of the strongest ways we can stay young, curious and grateful. As one example, below is a photo of one of our campers, Max, who carried the Eden Village spirit into his home community by asking the person in the fish department to show him how to gut a fish&#8230; and then Max tried it at home! A neighbor helped, and Max ended the evening more connected with both his neighbors and with the fish he ate. We celebrate the freedom we&#39;ve each been given to discover our sacred gift of life, in our own unique ways!</p>

	My local community group, the <a href="http://www.jewcology.com/community/Silver-Spring-Sustainability-Circle">Kayamut Silver Spring Sustainability Circle</a>, held our Tu b&#39;Shevat Seder on February 7.  It was the first time in a long time that I hosted a Tu b&#39;Shevat Seder that was actually on Tu b&#39;Shevat.  So I wanted to make it special. Instead of being a mock seder or a model seder, it was a real seder and an opportunity to experience Tu b&#39;Shevat for itself.</p>
<p>
	I know that Tu b&#39;Shevat has mystical meaning in addition to the more modern, environmental meaning we&#39;ve given to it.  For this seder, I wanted to blend a little of the mystical back into our understanding of Tu b&#39;Shevat.  I believe that this mystical understanding is not only complementary, but supportive of our goals at a deep level .</p>
<p>
	To achieve this, I began by reading from <em>Inviting G-d In</em>, Rabbi David Aaron&#39;s book about the holidays.  Regarding Tu b&#39;Shevat, he writes:</p>
<p>
	&quot;The Torah teaches that G-d created the world so that we could experience goodness in general and His goodness in particular.  Experiencing His goodness &#8212; bonding with G-d &#8212; is the greatest joy imaginable&#8230; If we eat and enjoy the fruits of this world for G-d&#39;s sake &#8212; because this is what He asks of us &#8212; then we are actually serving G-d and bonding with him.  We serve G-d by acknowledging that the fruits of this world are His gifts to us and by willingly accepting and enjoying those gifts&#8230; We connect to G-d by serving Him, and this means obeying His commandments to enjoy the fruits of this world.&quot; (p. 158-159)</p>
<p>
	Rabbi Aaron goes on to explain that the mystical significance of Tu b&#39;Shevat is to receive pleasure and have this act transformed into an act of service of G-d.  He writes:</p>
<p>
	&quot;An apple is not just an apple; an apple is a blessing.  Maybe I could believe that apples come from trees but a blessing could only come from G-d.  If I really contemplate the mystery and miracle of the taste, fragrance, beauty, and nutrition wrapped up in this apple, I see that it&#39;s more than just a fruit &#8211; it is a wondrous loving gift from G-d.  When I taste an apple with that kind of consciousness, I cannot but experience the presence of G-d within the physical.&quot;</p>
<p>
	Thus, we began our seder with a true appreciation of the fruit as a gift from G-d.  We began the seder with Canfei Nesharim&#39;s fruit meditation, but this time I tweaked it so that we could focus on the fruit not just as a blessing in itself but as a gift &#8212; from G-d!  All the way through the seder, when we ate fruit, we savored it and we experienced it as a gift.  This is part of the mystical beauty of Tu b&#39;Shevat.</p>
<p>
	Just today one of the participants told me that every time she slows down to eat, she remembers what we learned and how delicious food can be.</p>
<p>
	The other thing I was interested in was having this seder make a real difference.  That&#39;s not always easy to do, especially with a Tu b&#39;Shevat Seder.  So many things are happening at any one time, and the program does not lend itself to action. But this time we had a special opportunity.  The very next day, on Tu b&#39;Shevat, a group of environmentalists were going to meet with our delegate to Maryland&#39;s legislature to talk about bringing wind power to Maryland.  This is a campaign our group is already behind.</p>
<p>
	The fourth world of the Tu b&#39;Shevat Seder is emanation.  It&#39;s about transcending physicality and I like to use the time to appreciate the importance of things we cannot see.  I always ask: what things are important that we can&#39;t see?  It&#39;s a meaningful exercise.  People often take a few minutes to figure out an answer.  Someone always figures out that &quot;air&quot; is something we can&#39;t see that&#39;s very important.  Later on, someone usually comes up with &quot;love.&quot;  The suggestion I made this time: &quot;the opportunity to make a difference.&quot;  It&#39;s something we often cannot see.  It may take many years before you can see any change at all!  The <em>emunah</em>, the faith that it is possible is all we have for a long time.  And althought it&#39;s hard to see, the possibility of making a difference is incredibly important.</p>
<p>
	That gave me the opportunity to speak of something else that we can&#39;t see: wind.  And our group did something unique (thanks to Joelle Novey for suggesting it!): we sent a Tu b&#39;Shevat card to our Delegate (Del. <p>
	Another thing you can see?  The ripples of the difference you might make before they spread out. <p>
	I believe that we all have something meaningful to contribute to the world.  Maybe the key is just this: to believe in something you can&#39;t yet see!</p>
