One of the several troubles I have about hydrofracking is that industry was given a whole series of federal exemptions allowing the use of toxic chemicals and not mandating disclosure. I've been wondering how do we increase our citizen action at the same time as reducing our personal footprints? Stronger gov't protections are important! And for us all of us to find the ways to reduce our footprints as we meet the future with our actions today.

Thank you Evonne for courageously asking some very difficult and important questions. I think that examining our own contributions to this systemic problem is an important moral obligation. I also think that we as a Jewish community need to take a stand in the places where we live, work, learn, play and pray. We need to lower our collective demand for fossil fuels and non-renewable resources and we need to educate our communities on how to do the same. Fracking cannot be the solution, and yet, as you point out, our energy needs to come from somewhere. Let's put pressure on ourselves and our communities to curtail our consumption while pushing for easier access to and affordability of renewable energy.

I think you have good reason to ask some hard questions about this fracking project. Fracking is currently a VERY DIRTY enterprise, with significant environmental risks. However, new technologies may make it a less-destructive practice in time, but for now you should do everything you can to make the camps aware of the risks they are taking to their land and water. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/20/pennsylvania-fracking-spill-gas-blowout-2011_n_851637.html
See my post today for a little more about fracking.
